Van Dijk Voices Frustration Over Liverpool's Inconsistent Season

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has openly expressed his frustration at the team's lack of consistency this season, despite a commanding 4-0 victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League. The Reds advanced to the quarter-finals with one of their best performances of the campaign, registering 32 shots in a dominant display at Anfield on Tuesday.

Highs and Lows Define Liverpool's Campaign

This season has been a rollercoaster for Liverpool, marked by impressive wins and disappointing setbacks. They have secured notable victories against top-tier opponents like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Arsenal. However, these highs have been contrasted by losses to bottom-club Wolves and a draw with out-of-form Tottenham, highlighting the team's erratic form.

Van Dijk acknowledged this inconsistency, stating, "I think occasionally we have been showing and playing good games but not consistently and on a regular basis, and it's been frustrating for all of us and for the fans as well." The Dutch defender emphasized that the frustration stems from last season's success, where Liverpool won the league with consistent, high-quality football, making this year's ups and downs particularly jarring.

Fan Support and Player Responsibility

The atmosphere at Anfield has mirrored the team's performance, with fans booing after the Spurs game but creating a raucous environment during the Galatasaray match. While teammate Dominik Szoboszlai had questioned early departures by supporters, Van Dijk refused to criticise them, understanding their disappointment. "In all these years at Liverpool I've never ever questioned them and I still don't," he said, highlighting the mutual reliance between players and fans.

Van Dijk explained that the energetic display against Galatasaray was a result of this synergy: "It's a combination of performance and the fans, they play a big part in that. The fans can probably say if we bring that every week on the pitch then there is no issue, and we can say if the fans bring that every three or four days then there is no issue either. It is about doing it together." He took full responsibility for the players' performances, admitting they haven't always been good enough this season.

Looking Ahead to the Champions League Quarter-Finals

With Liverpool reaching the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2022, Van Dijk reflected on the achievement, noting it's his fifth time in eight years and shouldn't be taken for granted. "It was a good night. We shouldn't take this team for granted and we are not going to do that either," he said, urging the team to build on this performance and maintain consistency in upcoming matches.

The captain stressed the need to capitalise on good performances, something Liverpool has struggled with this season. As they prepare for the next round, the focus remains on overcoming the frustrations of inconsistency and delivering results that match their potential.
