Premier League icon Joleon Lescott has delivered a stark warning that Tottenham Hotspur are on a clear trajectory toward relegation this season based on their current disastrous form. The former Manchester City and England defender, who experienced relegation himself with Aston Villa in 2016, believes the club's players are showing signs of crumbling under pressure.
Current Form Points Toward Disaster
Tottenham currently sit in 16th position in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone with only nine games remaining this term. Their precarious position has been exacerbated by a series of poor performances that have left fans and pundits alike questioning the team's survival prospects.
Champions League Humiliation Compounds Problems
The north London club's troubles reached new depths on Tuesday with a devastating 5-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16. This result leaves Tottenham on the brink of elimination from Europe's premier competition unless they can produce a miraculous comeback in the second leg.
Manager Igor Tudor's tenure has begun disastrously with four consecutive losses since taking charge less than a month ago. Two of those defeats came in London derbies against Fulham and Crystal Palace, matches that supporters would have expected their team to win.
Lescott's Chilling Assessment
Speaking on the All Out Football podcast alongside Mirror Sport's Andy Dunn, Lescott provided a grim analysis of Tottenham's current predicament. The 43-year-old drew parallels with his own relegation experience, highlighting how pressure affects player decision-making during survival battles.
"Honestly, in terms of form, yeah," Lescott stated when asked if Tottenham could face the drop. "Because again, speaking about experience, none of their players have experienced this fight."
The former defender elaborated on how confidence evaporates during relegation battles, explaining: "Say a forward where he's taken a shot when he's full of confidence, now it needs to be perfect. Now I need to see the whole goal rather than half of the goal."
Players 'Going Missing' Under Pressure
Lescott described witnessing concerning signs among Tottenham's squad, noting that players appear reluctant to take responsibility during matches. He suggested this manifests in players avoiding passes and hiding from the ball when the pressure mounts.
"Players go missing all of a sudden," Lescott warned, drawing from his Villa experience. "And then as a defender, say for me, you're thinking, 'I don't want to play that ball into midfield in case it doesn't get there, and I'll go wide', but now the opportunity is gone."
The Premier League icon contrasted Tottenham's situation with clubs like Nottingham Forest and West Ham, whose supporters maintain backing even when their teams fall behind because they're accustomed to relegation battles.
Injury Problems No Excuse
While injuries have undoubtedly hampered Tottenham's campaign, Lescott and other observers note that the club's substantial spending in recent years should have provided sufficient squad depth to mount a much stronger challenge than what has materialized.
The Croatian manager Tudor now faces the monumental task of reversing this alarming slide with limited time remaining in the season. His appointment, initially seen as a potential turning point, has instead accelerated the club's decline according to recent results.
As the specter of relegation grows larger with each poor performance, Tottenham must find a way to rediscover their fighting spirit quickly. The coming weeks will determine whether Lescott's dire prediction becomes reality or whether the north London club can mount an unlikely escape from their current predicament.
