The Hundred Cricket Auction: New IPL-Style Format and Player Lineup
The Hundred Auction: New Format and Available Players

The Hundred Introduces Groundbreaking Auction Format

The England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) short-format competition, The Hundred, is undergoing a significant transformation this summer with the introduction of its first-ever auction. This move marks a departure from the previous draft system and is inspired by the highly successful Indian Premier League (IPL), following substantial investment from IPL teams. The auction will see players offered one by one, with franchises bidding to secure their services for the upcoming campaign.

Understanding The Hundred Competition

The Hundred is a 100-ball cricket competition featuring eight specially created franchises across England and Wales. Each franchise fields separate men's and women's teams, competing in distinct tournaments. The format includes an initial league stage, culminating in a finals day where the trophy is awarded. This year's edition promises heightened excitement with the new auction mechanism.

Auction Schedule and Viewing Details

The women's auction is scheduled for Wednesday at 10am, while the men's auction will follow on Thursday at 11am. Both events will be held at the iconic Piccadilly Lights in central London. Fans can watch the auctions live on Sky Sports Cricket, with streaming available via the Sky Sports website, app, and Sky Go for subscribers.

How the New Auction System Operates

Each of the eight men's and women's teams have already secured up to four players ahead of the auction, which reduces their remaining budgets. The auction itself is divided into three tiers: "hero," "ranked," and "nominated" players. The "hero" section includes the top 50 players based on a pre-auction survey, auctioned individually. Unsold "hero" players then join the "ranked" group, with the process continuing. Finally, all remaining registered players enter the "nominated" section, where teams nominate preferred picks, triggering auctions for contested players. Teams can acquire 14-16 players, with a maximum of four overseas signings. Additionally, "Vitality wildcard" spots are reserved for standout performers in the preceding T20 Vitality Blast competition.
