Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Delivers Stern Warning Ahead of PSG Clash
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has issued a blunt warning to his beleaguered squad, stating that if they replicate their performance from the FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain will score another four goals against them in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The Reds suffered a 4-0 drubbing at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with a disastrous 20-minute spell either side of half-time proving decisive.
Slot Backs Van Dijk's Criticism and Calls for Resilience
Slot, who is facing mounting pressure from disgruntled Liverpool supporters, expressed support for captain Virgil van Dijk's post-match comments. Van Dijk suggested that some teammates had 'given up' during the second half against City. Slot acknowledged these remarks, emphasising that the feeling of disappointment was shared by everyone connected to the club.
'What Virgil said, I think it makes complete sense,' Slot stated. 'It's completely normal, the feeling Virgil shared after the game. That is the feeling every player had, and not only every player, every staff member and every fan or supporter of Liverpool as well. Everyone involved in Liverpool Football Club was disappointed after that result.'
Stark Reality Check at the Parc des Princes
Speaking at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening, Slot delivered a candid assessment of the challenge ahead. 'I can tell you, if we have the 20 minutes we had at City, if we have them tomorrow evening here, we will again concede four goals,' he warned. 'Because these PSG players over here know how to act if we are having 20 minutes of that. So it's a challenge for us to be, from the first to the last second, at the level we were in the first 35 minutes against City.'
He added that failure to maintain that standard would result in 'a very hard night again, like it was last year, where we completely deserved to lose 4-0 over here, or maybe more.' However, Slot also highlighted the unpredictable nature of football, recalling Liverpool's narrow 1-0 victory in Paris during last season's round of 16, secured by an 85th-minute goal that felt like 'robbery.'
Context of Transition and PSG's Strengthened Squad
The manager acknowledged that PSG, who went on to win the Champions League for the first time last season, are now an even stronger team. In contrast, Liverpool are navigating a period of transition, marked by the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak, alongside the impending departure of star forward Mo Salah.
Isak, who has been plagued by injuries during his debut season on Merseyside, has travelled to Paris. Slot confirmed that while the striker will not start, he could feature from the bench in the first leg.
Appeal to Liverpool's Historic Fighting Spirit
Despite the recent setbacks, Slot urged his team to draw on the club's rich history of resilience in European competition. 'Now we have to show that mentality again, of just keep going and picking yourself up after disappointment, because this club has shown also many times that we can do very special things in difficult circumstances,' he asserted.
He insisted that if Liverpool can emulate their performance from the first 35 minutes against Manchester City—where they showed promise before collapsing—they still possess the capability to upset PSG and advance to the semi-finals. The stage is set for a crucial test of character as Liverpool aim to avoid another humbling defeat on the European stage.
