Arne Slot Confronts Galatasaray Challenge After Liverpool's Previous Defeat
Liverpool manager Arne Slot must navigate a critical Champions League encounter against Galatasaray on Tuesday, with the first leg of their last-16 tie presenting a stern test. The Dutch coach faces intense scrutiny over his team selection, particularly after Liverpool suffered a 1-0 loss to the Turkish side earlier in the season during the group stage.
Learning from Past Mistakes in Istanbul
The previous defeat in September came via a Victor Osimhen penalty, awarded after Dominik Szoboszlai handled the ball. At that time, Liverpool led the Premier League with a strong title defence, but the loss in Istanbul proved prophetic. It marked the second of four consecutive defeats, with Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United all securing victories that derailed Slot's ambitions for back-to-back titles at Anfield.
Slot defended his decisions post-match, citing rotation due to player fatigue and tactical adjustments by Galatasaray. He had rested Mohamed Salah and deployed Jeremie Frimpong on the wing, moves that sparked fan unrest as inconsistency plagued Liverpool through late 2025.
Steven Gerrard's Demand for Change
Ahead of Tuesday's rematch, selection dilemmas persist, especially regarding winger Cody Gakpo. The Dutch international has managed only one goal in his last ten appearances, while 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha has emerged as a compelling alternative. Ngumoha impressed in recent cameos, including a substitute appearance in a 2-1 loss to Wolves and a start in the FA Cup, prompting club legend Steven Gerrard to publicly advocate for his inclusion.
"[Slot] has to start Ngumoha now," Gerrard told TNT Sports. "He's doing more in a short cameo than Gakpo's doing in 65, 70 minutes. He deserves to start."
Slot's Cautious Approach Amid Intense Atmosphere
Despite Gerrard's plea, Slot has indicated a preference for experience in the hostile environment of Istanbul. He emphasised the unique challenges of playing at Galatasaray, describing the overwhelming noise and pressure that test players' mental fortitude.
"The whole atmosphere makes it different from any other away game," Slot explained. "The noise is so hard that sometimes you wonder if this could be done by human people. It's a challenging environment to play."
Injury Concerns and Key Absences
Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Alisson Becker due to a training injury, depriving the team of a key leader. However, unlike the September match, Mohamed Salah is expected to start on the right wing despite recent form issues. The central question remains whether Slot will embrace Gerrard's advice and start Ngumoha over Gakpo, balancing youth against experience in a high-stakes European fixture.
This Champions League tie not only tests Liverpool's tactical acumen but also Slot's ability to adapt from past errors, with fan expectations and legendary voices adding pressure to his selection decisions.
