Slot Acknowledges Fan Frustration Ahead of Liverpool's Champions League Showdown
Arne Slot has conceded that he must have "done a lot of things wrong" if Liverpool supporters are booing the team, but he insists the Anfield crowd has not turned against him. This comes as Liverpool prepare for a pivotal Champions League last-16 second leg at home against Galatasaray, where they trail 1-0 from the first leg.
Fan Reaction and Team Morale Under Scrutiny
The Liverpool manager described it as "never nice" to hear boos after the team's reaction to a draw with Tottenham, where a late goal conceded sparked frustration. Slot believes that winning can swiftly alter the glum mood surrounding the Premier League champions. He highlighted the club's history of supporting managers through ups and downs, suggesting that any discontent directed at him would indicate significant errors on his part.
"It’s never nice that they are frustrated because usually fans are not frustrated after you win," Slot stated. "So first of all you’re frustrated yourself and disappointed we haven’t won. Second of all, people told me when I first came here that if it [the booing] was towards me … this club is different than other clubs and the fans will support the manager for such a long time."
Liverpool's Performance and Upcoming Challenge
Despite not detailing specific mistakes, Slot defended his team's efforts, noting that Liverpool have outworked and created more chances than most opponents in 80%-90% of games this season. He expects defender Ibrahima Konaté to return from a hamstring issue for the Galatasaray match, bolstering the squad.
The head coach emphasized the importance of the Champions League tie, with a quarter-final spot against Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea at stake. "We feel the importance of this game," Slot said. "We are able to reach the quarter-final of the Champions League. That would be special for me as it would be my first time. It would be special for all of us."
Liverpool have suffered two defeats to Galatasaray this season, both at Rams Park, but Slot is optimistic that a different outcome is possible at Anfield. The team aims to transform their season's trajectory by advancing in Europe, potentially easing fan tensions with a victory.
