In a moment that will be etched into New York Mets folklore, Pete Alonso has shattered the franchise's single-season home run record with a breathtaking display of power hitting.
The 28-year-old first baseman, affectionately known as 'Polar Bear' by fans, launched his 42nd homer of the season during Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.
A Record-Breaking Swing
Alonso's historic blast came in the fifth inning off Braves pitcher Charlie Morton, a towering 430-foot shot that left no doubt as it sailed into the left-field stands. The crowd of 32,671 erupted as Alonso rounded the bases, knowing they had witnessed Mets history.
'It's an incredible honour,' Alonso said post-game. 'This franchise means everything to me, and to have my name in the record books is surreal.'
Surpassing Mets Legends
The previous record of 41 home runs was jointly held by Todd Hundley (1996) and Carlos Beltrán (2006). Alonso's achievement is particularly remarkable considering he's only in his fourth MLB season.
Mets manager Buck Showalter praised his star player: 'Pete's work ethic is second to none. He's earned every bit of this success through sheer determination.'
Chasing More History
With six weeks remaining in the regular season, Alonso now has his sights set on the National League record of 56 home runs, set by Hack Wilson in 1930. At his current pace, the powerful slugger could challenge this historic mark.
The Mets' victory over the Braves (7-3) was made even sweeter by Alonso's record-breaking performance, keeping them firmly in playoff contention.
