The Netherlands begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Japan in Group F on Sunday, June 14, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Ronald Koeman's side enter the tournament with a strong squad but unconvincing form, having lost 1-0 to Algeria and narrowly beaten Uzbekistan in pre-tournament friendlies, with Guus Til sent off late in the latter.
Koeman's preparations were dealt a blow by an injury to Jurrien Timber, who failed to recover from a groin problem. Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up in his place. The squad features a Liverpool-heavy core, including Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk, who will play key roles.
Japan, hailed as one of their strongest ever squads, are tipped for a deeper run than usual. Daichi Kamada, Daizen Maeda, and Ayase Ueda lead a well-drilled team. Captain Wataru Endo has recovered from an ankle injury, while Ao Tanaka impressed at Leeds. Japan beat England in March and will aim for at least the round of 16, their joint-best finish.
The match kicks off at 9pm BST and will be televised live on ITV1 in the UK, with coverage starting at 8.15pm. Live streaming is available via ITVX. The two nations last met 13 years ago, with the Netherlands winning 3-0 in a friendly in 2013.
