Rory McIlroy's ownership of a lavish £38m private jet may prove instrumental in his bid to defend the Masters title next month, as the golf star battles a persistent back injury. The Northern Irishman has been grappling with this physical setback in recent weeks, which forced his withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month.
Injury Comeback and Tournament Performance
McIlroy made a cautious return at The Players Championship last week, arriving just under 24 hours before his tee time after a last-minute decision to fly to TPC Sawgrass following intensive treatment. His T46 finish marked a disappointing end to his title defence at that event, but he remains focused on rehabilitation. Post-tournament, McIlroy emphasised the need to assess his physical condition after completing the final round, indicating a careful approach to his recovery.
At 36 years old, McIlroy did participate in TGL golf this week, where he was eliminated after Boston Common's loss to Jupiter Links GC. He has openly admitted that he will make a last-minute decision on competing in any further tournaments ahead of the Masters, having secured his first Augusta victory last year. With no confirmed commitments until then, he has a full three weeks for rest and recovery before the Masters commences on April 9.
The Role of the Private Jet in Recovery
A key factor in maximising his rehabilitation time is McIlroy's private jet, a 2022 Gulfstream G650ER, which he frequently uses for tournament travel. This aircraft allows him to delay decisions on participation until the eleventh hour, ensuring he only travels if fit enough. Fans have previously tracked this jet, noting its touchdown in Augusta on March 24 last year before heading to Houston the same day, showcasing its utility for flexible scheduling.
The Gulfstream G650ER is among the most recognisable models in its class, having set over 125 world speed records and with more than 500 aircraft in operation, making it one of the most reliable business jets globally. Depending on configuration and model year, a pre-owned G650ER can cost between $40 million (£30m) and over $60 million (£45m), while a brand-new model may reach around $78 million (£58m). McIlroy's acquisition reportedly set him back £38m.
Luxurious Features and Comfort
This substantial investment offers unparalleled luxury, with the G650ER accommodating between 13 and 16 passengers and featuring the option to create 3.5 to four onboard living areas. Certain versions allow passengers to convert individual seats into beds, enhancing comfort during long flights. The aircraft also boasts 16 panoramic oval windows designed to flood the cabin with natural light, ensuring a pleasant journey for all on board.
Following The Players Championship, McIlroy provided an update on his back issues, stating, "I haven't really made a decision either way. I'll see how my body feels. We'll see how I feel in practice and at home and if I get itchy feet maybe I'll add an event at some point. I feel like it was important to make the weekend here and play an extra couple of days." He added, "Just see how the next week goes, see how once I get back to a full practice schedule and in the gym and stuff like that, see how my body reacts to that ... and then I'll see. Happy I got through four days and my body feels good."
McIlroy noted that his game improved slightly as the week progressed, despite scores not reflecting it over the weekend, and he was pleased his body held up well through four rounds. With his private jet ready for action, McIlroy's ability to make timely travel decisions could be a decisive factor in his Masters title defence, blending luxury with strategic advantage in his recovery journey.
