Man Utd's three-man midfield shortlist emerges as Bruno Fernandes future clarified
Man Utd's midfield plans & Fernandes stance revealed

Manchester United have moved to clarify their position on captain Bruno Fernandes, insisting he remains a crucial part of their plans, despite the Portuguese star's recent revelation that the club was open to him leaving last summer.

Fernandes' 'hurt' over summer exit suggestion

In a candid interview with Canal 11, Bruno Fernandes disclosed that he felt the club's hierarchy lacked the "courage" to make a definitive decision on his future when a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal arrived. The 30-year-old claimed he perceived an attitude from the club that suggested, "If you leave, it's not so bad for us."

"It hurts me a lot," Fernandes stated. "More than hurting, it makes me sad because I'm a player who they have nothing to criticise about. I'm always available, and I always play - good or bad - I give my all."

United's firm stance and future midfield strategy

However, sources within Manchester United have strongly countered this narrative. Club insiders have reiterated that the management was consistently clear throughout the summer window that Fernandes was integral to their future under manager Ruben Amorim.

They point to Fernandes' own comments from October, where he acknowledged the club shared the manager's desire for him to stay. The Manchester Evening News understands there is absolutely no desire to part ways with the skipper, whose contract runs until 2027 with an option for a further year.

Instead, the club's focus is on strengthening the midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window. Last summer, United considered a move for Brighton's Carlos Baleba, but were deterred by a valuation exceeding £100 million. The club opted to strengthen other areas, confident in their existing midfield options to secure European football.

Three names on the Red Devils' radar

As part of their planning, United have been monitoring a trio of midfield talents. The shortlist includes:

  • Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion)
  • Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)
  • Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

This search is set against the backdrop of Casemiro's uncertain future. The Brazilian's contract expires at the end of the current season, though the club holds an option to extend it by 12 months. Activating that clause would see the 33-year-old remain the squad's top earner.

Despite widespread expectation that Casemiro will depart, his influential performances this season have sparked rumours of a potential stay. Fernandes, for his part, has contributed a remarkable 103 goals and 93 assists in 307 appearances for United since his arrival, solidifying his status as a key figure at Old Trafford.
