Joan Laporta Returns to Power in Barcelona Presidential Election
Joan Laporta has been re-elected as president of FC Barcelona in a resounding victory, securing 68.18% of the vote against opponent Victor Font's 29.78%. The election, held on Sunday, saw Laporta celebrate with players and supporters, marking a significant moment for the club.
Election Day Festivities and Football Triumph
The day began with polls opening at 9am, and Laporta cast his vote early at 9.20am. He remained a charismatic presence throughout, engaging with fans, holding babies, and taking selfies. In the afternoon, attention turned to football as Barcelona faced Sevilla, with Laporta watching from the stands alongside 56,482 fans. The match ended in a 5-2 victory for Barcelona, featuring a hat-trick from Raphinha and contributions from other key players.
After the game, numerous first-team players, including Hansi Flick, Fermín López, and Dani Olmo, visited the polling station to vote. Laporta greeted them warmly, with chants of "President! President!" echoing through the crowd. Notably, Marc-André ter Stegen was unable to vote due to unpaid membership dues, while others like Aitana Bonmatí and Jordi Pujol participated.
Historical Context and Turnout
This election recorded the lowest turnout since 1997, with only 48,480 of 114,504 registered members voting. However, Laporta's margin of victory was the largest in the club's history, with 30,184 votes in his favor. He will be formally sworn in on 1 July, extending his tenure to 17 years across two spells, having first taken office in 2003.
Victor Font campaigned on issues such as Barcelona's financial difficulties, transparency concerns, and delays in Camp Nou renovations. He criticized Laporta's management, comparing him to both Kennedy and Trump, but failed to gain significant traction among voters.
Celebrations and Future Outlook
Following the declaration of his win at midnight, Laporta celebrated with a Mariachi band and later at Luz de Gas nightclub, where he lit a cigar and opened cava. His re-election is seen as a reaffirmation of his leadership, with supporters praising his bold approach and connection to the fanbase.
Laporta's tenure has been marked by both triumphs and controversies, including the Negreira case and financial strategies involving asset sales. Despite this, his focus on building a successful team, highlighted by last season's treble and current top position in La Liga, resonated with voters. The future looks promising under his continued guidance, with Hansi Flick's management adding to the optimism.
