Lachie Neale's AFL Future: Adelaide and St Kilda Emerge as Contenders
Brisbane Lions AFL star Lachie Neale, a two-time premiership winner, is facing a pivotal career decision as his contract nears its end in 2026. Initially, speculation centred on a potential return to Western Australia to be closer to his children, but new reports suggest his options have expanded significantly.
Expanding Interest Beyond Western Australia
Footy journalist Cal Twomey has revealed that the Adelaide Crows and St Kilda Saints have joined the race for Neale's services, alongside the previously rumoured West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers. This development comes after Neale's ex-wife, Jules, relocated to Perth with their two children following their highly publicised split earlier this year.
On the Gettable Podcast, Twomey explained, 'Brisbane have given their blessing for him to look around given his family situation. Everyone is looking at Fremantle and West Coast as options – they're obvious ... but does he want to finish his career at a club building or a club continuing to challenge for premierships?'
Family Dynamics and Career Crossroads
The family upheaval has played a central role in Neale's considerations. After stepping down as co-captain of the Brisbane Lions, Neale publicly acknowledged letting his family down amid allegations of an affair with Tess Crosley. He stated, 'I have let my family down and I apologise for my actions.' Since then, Jules has moved to Perth with the children, while Neale resides in a Brisbane apartment.
Twomey further noted, 'I think other clubs will try to get involved in this conversation if it drags out too. So, I'm not just looking at WA, I'm looking at Adelaide, I'm looking at St Kilda... as well.' This indicates that the bidding for Neale could intensify as the 2026 deadline approaches.
Brisbane's Support and Current Standing
Despite the uncertainty, Neale remains a key figure for the Brisbane Lions, who are currently premiership favourites. Coach Chris Fagan has granted him permission to explore his future options, reflecting the club's understanding of his personal circumstances. For now, Neale continues to be a linchpin in the Lions' midfield, contributing to their strong position in the AFL.
The situation highlights the complex interplay between professional sports careers and personal life, with Neale's decision likely to influence multiple clubs' strategies in the coming seasons.
