PGA Tour star Justin Thomas has playfully referred to Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, as a "little punk" while simultaneously expressing his earnest desire to serve as a big brother figure to the teenage golfer. This blend of affectionate ribbing and serious mentorship highlights the close bond between the two, forged through Thomas's longstanding friendship with the legendary Tiger Woods.
A Blossoming Friendship on the Fairway
Justin Thomas, a two-time PGA Championship winner, enjoys a flourishing relationship with 17-year-old Charlie Woods. This connection has deepened as Thomas has closely monitored Charlie's development, largely due to his own professional and personal ties with Tiger. The scrutiny on Charlie is immense, given his father's iconic status in the sport, making the guidance of experienced players like Thomas potentially invaluable.
Charlie Woods's Current Standing and Challenges
Charlie Woods, currently ranked 53rd in the boys junior golf rankings, recently announced his commitment to play college golf at Florida State University as part of their 2027 recruiting class. However, he faced a tough week at the prestigious Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in South Carolina, finishing last in a field of 36 players and trailing his nearest competitor by ten shots. Despite this setback, his raw talent remains undeniable.
Thomas's Candid Comments and Mentorship Offer
During an appearance on 'The Smylie Show' with former PGA pro Smylie Kaufman, Thomas shared his thoughts on Charlie's growth and character. "He’s grown up a lot," Thomas remarked. "He’s still a little punk but not a total punk kid. He can beat me up so I can’t say too much." When asked if he sees himself as an older brother to Charlie, Thomas responded warmly, "I wanna be if he wants me to be."
Reflecting on his own career, Thomas added, "I was very lucky to have some people like that in my life and I know how helpful that was… I wanna help in any way I can. The shots that he can hit, a lot of guys on Tour can’t hit. He’s very, very impressive and I’m rooting for the best."
Thomas's Own Pursuits and Physical Demands
As Thomas prepares for next month's Masters, he is also grappling with the physical toll of a demanding schedule. Having played two consecutive events shortly after undergoing back surgery, he admitted, "Right now I feel fine. I’m a little tired, to be honest." He described a recent scene in the physio room, noting the unusual quietness as players recovered from intense competitions.
"It’s usually very loud, because it’s a lot of banter and BS going on in there. But everybody just looked like crap, to be honest. Myself included," Thomas said. He emphasized the importance of mental resilience and rest as he faces a grueling stretch of tournaments, including Augusta, RBC, Miami, Quail Hollow, and the PGA Championship. "It’s just a crazy, crazy amount of not only big tournaments, but extremely difficult golf courses," he noted, underscoring the challenges ahead.
In summary, Justin Thomas's playful jab at Charlie Woods as a "little punk" is tempered by a genuine offer of mentorship, highlighting the supportive dynamics within professional golf. As both navigate their respective paths—Charlie in his junior career and Thomas in his pursuit of major titles—their relationship exemplifies the camaraderie and guidance that can shape the future of the sport.
