Former Footballer Jimmy Bullard Excluded from Prestigious Golf Tournament
Jimmy Bullard, the former Premier League midfielder, has been banned from attending the Sunningdale Foursomes golf tournament, missing out on the opportunity to compete alongside sporting icons such as Sir Andy Murray and Gareth Bale. The 47-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2012, faced consequences for a controversial incident involving a beer bottle at the exclusive Sunningdale Golf Club.
Beer Bottle Incident Leads to Club Suspension
Bullard, known for his appearances on the 'Golf Life' YouTube channel, caused offence to club members when he used an empty Peroni beer bottle as an improvised tee at the first hole. In a candid admission on snooker legend Stephen Hendry's 'Cue Tips' YouTube channel, Bullard expressed regret over his actions.
"I'm not allowed to go again," Bullard confessed. "I had a few drinks and I got carried away. I put a Peroni off the first tee and clipped a ball off it. It's obviously not the thing to do, so I apologise."
He further appealed to any watching Sunningdale members, stating, "If there are any Sunningdale members watching, I do apologise. I really want to come back." Notably, Hendry retains his own membership at the club, highlighting the severity of Bullard's transgression.
Sunningdale Foursomes Proceeds Without Bullard
The Sunningdale Foursomes, a prestigious pro-am tournament established in 1934, is scheduled to begin this week, featuring morning and afternoon play across the Old and New courses. The competition will culminate with semi-finals and finals on Friday.
Key participants include:
- Sir Andy Murray, partnering with two-time European Tour winner Eddie Pepperell.
- Gareth Bale, teaming up with Matthew Wylie.
Both Murray and Bale are avid golf enthusiasts, with Bale boasting a impressive 0.1 handicap. They previously showcased their skills at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship pro-am in October 2025, where Murray demonstrated notable prowess on the course.
Bullard's Golf Passion Overshadowed by Controversy
Since retiring from football, Bullard has cultivated a strong passion for golf, regularly sharing his exploits on social media and through collaborations with ex-Soccer AM colleague Peter 'Tubes' Dales. However, his antics at Sunningdale, a club renowned for its sophistication, have resulted in a suspension that excludes him from this year's event.
The incident underscores the strict etiquette expected at elite golf venues, where such behaviour is deemed unacceptable. Bullard's ban serves as a reminder of the consequences for breaching club protocols, even for well-known sports personalities.
As the tournament progresses, fans will watch Murray and Bale compete for the amateur title, while Bullard remains sidelined, reflecting on his misstep and hoping for a future reinstatement to the club.
