Mexican Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa Eyes Historic Sixth World Cup Appearance
Guillermo Ochoa Could Make Record Sixth World Cup This Summer

Mexican football legend Guillermo Ochoa could be poised for a historic sixth World Cup appearance this summer, potentially joining an elite club alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The 40-year-old goalkeeper, instantly recognizable by his trademark long curly hair restrained by a black headband, stands a chance of making Mexico's squad after first-choice keeper Angel Malagon ruptured his Achilles tendon.

The Road to a Record Sixth Tournament

Ochoa has already participated in five World Cup tournaments: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022, appearing in three of those editions. Should he be selected for the upcoming competition, he would equal the record currently pursued only by Messi and Ronaldo. Outside this exclusive trio, just five other players have reached five World Cups, with three of those being fellow Mexicans.

Not a Certain Selection

Ochoa's inclusion is far from guaranteed as he faces stiff competition from Tala Rangel, Carlos Acevedo, and Carlos Moreno for one of three goalkeeper spots. However, significant public clamor exists for his selection, particularly since Mexico will play all three group stage matches against South Africa, South Korea, and an undetermined opponent on home soil.

Current Club Situation and International Legacy

The veteran goalkeeper currently plays for AEL Limassol, who occupy fifth position in the Cypriot First Division. Despite accumulating 151 international caps for Mexico, Ochoa hasn't featured for the national team since 2024 and is unlikely to surpass Andres Guardado's record of 182 appearances.

Iconic World Cup Performance

Ochoa's most memorable international moment came during the 2014 World Cup group stage against Brazil, where he produced four world-class saves to deny Paulinho, Neymar (twice), and Thiago Silva from seemingly certain goals. This performance earned him the nickname 'Mexican Jesus' among fans as far away as Hong Kong.

National Hero with Eccentric Reputation

With 3.1 million Instagram followers, Ochoa remains a national hero in Mexico despite playing his club football in Cyprus. The goalkeeper has also developed a reputation for rather unconventional behavior. Last summer, he reportedly employed an inventive method to withdraw from a potential move to Spanish second division side Burgos.

The Burgos Transfer Saga

According to Spanish journalist Sergio Gonzalez Pulgar, Burgos had completed Ochoa's medical and agreed most contract details with his representatives. At that critical juncture, Ochoa apparently requested a minor contract modification before excusing himself to purchase a hot drink. He never returned to negotiations, and despite repeated attempts to contact him, Burgos never heard from the goalkeeper again. Just over a week later, Ochoa signed for his current club, AEL Limassol.
