A critical World Cup match for England has been safeguarded following the resolution of a contentious £5.8 million stadium security funding dispute in the United States. The Three Lions' Group L clash with Ghana this summer will now definitively take place at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Boston, after initial fears that the fixture could be jeopardised.
Security Cost Standoff Overcome
Concerns had mounted after Foxborough town officials demanded an upfront payment covering all security measures, including police deployment, as a condition for granting an event license. The impasse pitted the town against both FIFA tournament organisers and Kraft Sports & Entertainment, the company led by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, which operates the stadium.
Joint Agreement Reached
A joint statement issued by Kraft Sports & Entertainment, Boston Soccer 2026, and the Town of Foxborough confirms that a comprehensive understanding has been achieved. The parties collectively stated they have "reached an understanding that will allow Boston Soccer 2026 and the Town of Foxborough to finalise the details needed to approve an event license at the March 17 public hearing and ensure a safe and successful FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament at Gillette Stadium this summer."
While the formal license issuance remains pending until the hearing, the broad terms have been agreed upon, effectively removing the threat to England's match. Crucially, the statement specifies that "the Town of Foxborough will not incur any cost or financial burden related to the FIFA World Cup, with Boston Soccer 2026 providing advance funding for security-related capital expenditures and the full extent of deployment that public safety officials have determined is needed."
Personal Intervention Credited
Foxborough town chair Bill Yukna attributed the breakthrough to direct involvement from Robert Kraft himself. Yukna expressed, "On behalf of the Town of Foxborough, I’m very pleased to say that all of our funding concerns have been addressed. I want to personally thank KSE and Robert Kraft for his involvement in bringing the funding concerns to a resolution."
He further acknowledged local officials, including Police Chief Michael Grace, Fire Chief Michael Kelleher, and Town Manager Paige Duncan, for their dedicated efforts in resolving the matter. The Gillette Stadium is scheduled to host seven World Cup matches this summer, featuring not only England's game but also two fixtures involving Scotland.
Broader Tournament Turbulence
This resolution comes amid a chaotic build-up to the 2026 World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States. With merely three months remaining until the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on June 11, several other issues persist. Iran has previously threatened to withdraw from the tournament, while Iraq's playoff participation faces significant uncertainty due to travel complications stemming from ongoing regional conflicts in the Middle East.
The settlement of the Foxborough dispute provides a rare piece of positive news for organisers, ensuring that one of the tournament's high-profile fixtures involving England will proceed as planned without further financial or logistical obstacles.
