David Luiz on Chelsea Return: 'No Regrets' Despite Breaking Promise
David Luiz: No Regrets Over Chelsea Return After Broken Vow

David Luiz Reflects on Chelsea Departure and Emotional Return

Former Chelsea star David Luiz has opened up about his complex relationship with the Blues, detailing his reasons for leaving the club and later making a dramatic return to Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian defender, who played 248 games across two spells, won multiple trophies including the Premier League and Champions League.

A Record Transfer to Paris Saint-Germain

Luiz initially joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011, quickly becoming a fan favourite as he helped secure FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League victories. His standout performances earned him a £50million move to PSG in 2014, which set a world-record fee for a defender at that time.

The centre-back explained his decision to leave Chelsea: "Chelsea offered me a new contract to stay but it was my choice to come here. I was happy with the plan PSG offered to me and I think it was exactly the right moment to move."

He added: "I was so happy at Chelsea – I won two titles, I won another title for the FA Cup, so it was great for me. I'm a lucky guy. I was playing for a big club in Chelsea and now I've got another opportunity to play for a big club."

Champions League Clash and Broken Promise

During his debut season with PSG, Luiz faced his former club in the Champions League round of 16. In a dramatic return to Stamford Bridge in March 2015, the defender scored a late equaliser to force extra time, though PSG eventually advanced on away goals thanks to future Chelsea star Thiago Silva.

Luiz immediately apologised for breaking his promise not to celebrate against his former team: "Tonight was good for me to score. I said I wouldn't celebrate but my emotions I couldn't control. Thank you to Chelsea and sorry I celebrated because I was so emotional."

Emotional Return to Chelsea

After winning eight trophies during his two years with PSG, Luiz made an emotional return to Chelsea in 2016, citing unfinished business with the Premier League title as his primary motivation. In his first season back, the £34m signing fulfilled his ambition as Antonio Conte's side marched to the championship.

"I had already won several titles with Chelsea, played my part in a beautiful period in the club's history and made so many friends," Luiz told FourFourTwo magazine in May 2017. "I thought it was time to move on, so I had no regrets. But things change quickly in football."

He continued: "Winning the Premier League has always been an obsession of mine. We've worked hard to make this dream come true."

Later Career and Legacy

The 38-year-old remained with Chelsea for two more seasons before signing for Arsenal in 2019. In January 2026, he returned to Stamford Bridge with Cypriot outfit Pafos, who had finished 26th in the Champions League group phase, narrowly missing out on the play-off round.

Luiz's career with Chelsea spanned some of the club's most successful periods, with his two spells bookending significant European and domestic achievements. His journey from promising signing to record-breaking transfer and emotional return represents one of modern football's more compelling narratives.
