Carrick Unfazed by Scholes' Social Media Barbs After United Defeat
Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has responded to social media criticism from his former teammate Paul Scholes, dismissing the remarks as 'nothing' and emphasising he is not concerned by the online commentary. The exchange follows United's recent 2-1 loss to Newcastle, which prompted Scholes to post a sarcastic comment on Instagram about Carrick's managerial abilities.
Scholes' Instagram Post Sparks Brief Controversy
Scholes, who played alongside Carrick in midfield for eight years at Manchester United, wrote on Instagram: 'Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been crap last four games.' The post was interpreted by some as a pointed critique of Carrick's interim tenure, during which United have struggled for consistency.
Scholes later sent a private message to Carrick to clarify that his comments were not intended to be 'offensive', but Carrick appeared relaxed about the situation. In a press conference, Carrick smiled and stated: 'It was nothing really, there’s nothing to say about it really. I think that is just where we are in terms of social media and captions and quotes. It can be taken in different ways. So just be calm about it and understand the real meaning of things.'
Carrick Advocates for Perspective in Social Media Era
Carrick further elaborated on his philosophy regarding public criticism, noting: 'Listen, there are different opinions out there and it’s fine, people can have different opinions. Things get taken from one extreme to another. It is what it is. I am not worried about it and don’t make a big deal of it either.' His comments highlight a broader trend of football figures navigating the instant, often misinterpreted nature of social media discourse.
Maguire's England Recall Prospects Discussed
Meanwhile, Carrick also addressed the international future of defender Harry Maguire, who has not featured for England since September 2024. Under Carrick's management at Old Trafford, Maguire has been a consistent presence, and Carrick believes he has earned a recall to the national squad.
Carrick, a former England international himself, praised Maguire's recent performances: 'Harry has been playing well, that is pretty obvious to say. I think he's just showed his experience in situations, the composure, know what it feels like, and now understands what it takes, and he's done ever so well.' He added: 'Whatever's going to happen with England is going to happen with England, but he's definitely put himself back in the frame, if he was ever out of it. Hopefully from my point of view he gets picked.'
This endorsement comes as England manager Thomas Tuchel prepares to name his upcoming squad, with Maguire's form potentially putting him back into contention after a period out of the international setup.
