Cardiff City Launch Investigation into Alleged Racist Gesture During Match
League One club Cardiff City have condemned what they describe as "repugnant behaviour" from a supporter who allegedly made a racist gesture towards Lincoln City captain Tendayi Darikwa during Saturday's 2-0 home defeat. The incident occurred while Darikwa was celebrating Lincoln taking a 55th-minute lead at Cardiff City Stadium.
Club Takes Immediate Action
Cardiff City have reported the matter to South Wales Police and are in discussions with the Football Association as part of their investigation. The club has stated they are "disgusted" by the alleged incident and have appealed to supporters for information to help identify the individual responsible.
"The club has a zero-tolerance approach to racism and all forms of discrimination," read an official statement. "We are committed to doing our part to eliminate it from our game and society."
Internal Investigation Concludes No Misinterpretation
Initial reports had suggested there might have been some misinterpretation of the gesture, but Cardiff City have now completed their internal investigation. "Having completed an internal investigation and sought witness statements, it is our firm opinion that this is definitively not the case," the club confirmed.
The statement continued: "We ask supporters to help with any information pertaining to the individual's identity, or indeed for the person to make themselves known to the club amidst an ongoing police investigation."
Recent History of Discrimination Incidents
This incident follows Cardiff City being formally charged by the Football Association last month following alleged homophobic chanting during their Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Chelsea in December. The club issued a strong statement at that time condemning the alleged chanting.
"As an inclusive club that positions itself at the heart of our community, we strongly condemn the language of identified individuals and fully support South Wales Police's commitment to holding persons responsible," the December statement read.
The club emphasized: "No form of discrimination is tolerated at our club, nor should it ever be in society. Supporters are reminded that such behaviour is criminal and is treated as this whenever identified."
Additional Incident During Same Match
Saturday's match also saw a separate incident where a vape was reportedly thrown at Lincoln goalkeeper George Wickens. While this was a different matter from the alleged racist gesture, it contributed to a concerning atmosphere during the League One fixture.
Cardiff City's statement regarding the alleged racist gesture concluded with strong language: "We are disgusted by this repugnant behaviour and the impact it has had on those affected."
The investigation continues as Cardiff City work with authorities to identify the individual responsible for the alleged racist gesture towards Tendayi Darikwa.
