Former Real Madrid teammates Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo have faced off as rivals in Saudi Arabia, with Benzema's Al-Ittihad securing a 2-1 victory over Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in last month's King Cup of Nations.
Dismissing the 'Cold' Greeting Speculation
Following the match, media reports suggested a frosty relationship between the two football legends, pointing to what was described as a 'very cold' on-pitch greeting. However, Benzema has now directly addressed these claims in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS.
The French striker firmly brushed aside any assumptions of animosity, revealing that their interaction away from the cameras told a different story. 'No, please. We had talked in the locker room,' Benzema stated. 'We hug, we talk... then in the field we can't or we don't have to do it again.'
A Bond Forged in Madrid
The pair share a storied history, having formed part of a formidable attacking trio with Gareth Bale during their nine years together at Real Madrid. This period was marked by immense success, with the club securing numerous trophies and frequently overcoming arch-rivals Barcelona.
Their careers have since taken them to the Middle East, but this time they find themselves on opposing sides. Since Ronaldo's high-profile move to Al-Nassr in 2023, the two superstars have clashed on the pitch several times in the Saudi Pro League.
Mutual Respect and a Shared Mission
Benzema emphasised that the perceived distance between them on the field is not a sign of a fractured relationship, but rather a reflection of their professional focus during a game. 'It seems like we have to say things or do things in front of the television. It's not like that,' he explained. 'Much respect. We find him in the field and everyone is doing their own thing.'
Beyond his personal connection with Ronaldo, Benzema also spoke about the broader impact of international stars moving to Saudi Arabia. He believes that players like himself and Ronaldo are crucial for the growth of football in the country.
'Saudi Arabia needs players like Cristiano, or like me, or like others who have come here to give them some of the things we have in Europe,' the striker continued. 'We have to teach the local lads what it takes so they can go to other clubs.'
Benzema concluded by praising the environment, calling Saudi Arabia a 'very good place' for him and commending the well-mannered nature of the people in their daily interactions.
