Rebus Returns for Second Series on BBC with New Cast Additions

Filming has commenced on the second series of the BBC drama Rebus, with Richard Rankin reprising his role as Detective John Rebus. The series, produced by Eleventh Hour Films, will be shot in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow over the coming months, and is set to debut on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland in 2027.

New cast members joining the series include John Michie, Stephen McCole, Emily Barber, Lorne MacFadyen, Conor Berry, Ivan Ivashkin, Olga Safronova, Douglas Russell, Alexis Rodney, Reece Montague, and Joshua Haynes. They will appear alongside returning series regulars such as Brian Ferguson, Lucie Shorthouse, Amy Manson, Neshla Caplan, Stuart Bowman, Noof Ousellam, Thoren Ferguson, Mia McKenzie, Andrew John Tait, and Cassidy Little.

Written by Gregory Burke and based on Ian Rankin's best-selling novels, the second series continues to explore Rebus's complex world as he navigates Scottish crime and personal conflict. The new season delves into the links between violent criminals and the professional bourgeois world of law and finance, where police sometimes fear to tread.

Richard Rankin expressed his enthusiasm for returning: “There’s a real sense of excitement about stepping back into Rebus’ world. We were incredibly fortunate with the team we assembled for the first series, and it’s a genuine pleasure to be returning alongside so many familiar faces. At the same time, we’re welcoming some fantastic new talent this season, and it’s already exciting to see the energy, ideas and depth they’re bringing to the story.”

The first series, which launched in 2024, attracted 6.3 million viewers for its debut episode and won three RTS Scotland awards for Best Drama, Writer, and Director. The second series consists of six 60-minute episodes, directed by Niall MacCormick, with Angela Murray as producer. It is commissioned by Lindsay Salt and Louise Thornton, with executive producers including Paula Cuddy, Jill Green, Eve Gutierrez, Niall MacCormick, Gregory Burke, and Ian Rankin.
