Manchester United's challenging January has taken another turn for the worse, with rivals Aston Villa now leading the pursuit for a key midfield target. This comes as the club attempts to salvage a season thrown into disarray by the recent departure of manager Ruben Amorim.
Villa Steal a March in Gallagher Chase
The search for midfield reinforcements at Old Trafford has suffered a significant setback. Aston Villa have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid's England international, Conor Gallagher. The 25-year-old, who has found game time limited in Spain, had been viewed as an ideal and affordable target for United this month.
According to reports, Unai Emery's side are exploring a loan deal for the former Chelsea and Crystal Palace player. However, the Spanish club are holding out for any agreement to include a mandatory £35 million purchase option. This stipulation could yet allow United to re-enter the fray, but they would need to match those terms or offer a higher upfront fee.
Securing Gallagher for £35m would still be considered a bargain in the current market and would address a major area of concern. United's midfield is in a state of flux, with Kobbie Mainoo hoping for a recall after being marginalised under Amorim, and Manuel Ugarte linked with an exit. Furthermore, the persistent interest from Saudi Arabian clubs in captain Bruno Fernandes adds to the uncertainty.
Villa, however, currently hold a powerful advantage. They can offer Champions League football and are genuine contenders in the Premier League title race, a stark contrast to United's current predicament on and off the pitch.
Wheatley Returns to Carrington in Tactical Recall
In a separate development, Manchester United have exercised a break clause to recall 19-year-old striker Ethan Wheatley from his loan spell at League One side Northampton Town. The England under-20 international made 25 appearances for the Cobblers, contributing three goals and four assists.
The decision is understood to be a tactical one by United, aimed at giving the highly-regarded prospect a better opportunity to develop. Northampton boss Kevin Nolan expressed his disappointment at the move, but praised the work done with the player. "We are disappointed Ethan has been recalled but we are proud of the work we have done with him," Nolan stated.
United now plan to seek a loan move for Wheatley at a higher level of football. The recall was managed by Stephen Torpey, who oversees loans following Jonny Evans's departure from the head of loans and pathways role.
