Aston Martin Eye Team Principal Change After Disastrous F1 Start, Horner Not Considered
Aston Martin May Replace Newey as Team Principal After Poor Start

Aston Martin are reportedly considering a major leadership change after a disastrous start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, with Adrian Newey's position as Team Principal under serious threat following just two races. However, sources indicate that former Red Bull boss Christian Horner is not being considered as a potential replacement for the role.

Disastrous Start Under Newey's Leadership

The Green Machine have endured a catastrophic beginning to the new campaign under former Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey. Both drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have failed to register a single championship point following the opening races in Australia and China, with both competitors unable to finish last time out in Shanghai.

Reliability Issues Plague Early Season

Concerns about the team's competitiveness emerged even before the season opener in Melbourne earlier this month. Two of the four battery packs supplied by Honda for the race weekend developed faults after just the first hour of on-track running during the initial practice session, raising questions about whether Aston Martin would be able to participate in the race at all.

Speaking candidly about the challenging situation Aston Martin find themselves in, Newey suggested that engine reliability issues continue to hamper their performance. He pointed to a shortage of Formula 1 experience amongst Honda's workforce as a major contributing factor to their troubles.

"They re-entered with let's say only, I'm guessing, 30 per cent of their original team and now in a budget cap era," Newey explained. "So they started very much on the back foot and unfortunately they've struggled to catch back up."

Internal Tension and Leadership Concerns

Reports from SoyMotor now suggest that Newey's role at Aston Martin is under significant threat following their disappointing start to the season. The publication reports a substantial amount of 'tension, nervousness, and disappointment' within the team, which they say is 'combined with the aforementioned lack of leadership.'

It is thus suggested that Aston Martin is 'actively searching for a new team principal to take the lead in management and public relations' as they seek to turn around their fortunes. However, this development doesn't necessarily imply that Newey will be dismissed from the organization entirely.

Potential Role Transition for Newey

Rather than outright dismissal, Adrian Newey is expected to transition into a different role within the squad should the team principal change materialize. This would allow the experienced technical mind to continue contributing to the team's development while new leadership takes charge of overall management and strategic direction.

Aston Martin's next opportunity to secure their first points of the season will come in Japan a week on Sunday, providing an immediate test for whatever leadership structure emerges from this period of uncertainty. The team have been approached for comment regarding these reports but have yet to issue an official statement.
