Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was left visibly seething after his side conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
Late Heartbreak Halts United's Momentum
The result brought a shuddering halt to what had been a promising five-game unbeaten run for the Red Devils. Their last home outing, a 1-0 defeat to Everton ten days prior, had already dented confidence, and this latest setback proved equally frustrating. United had responded to that loss with a 2-1 comeback win at Crystal Palace just days earlier, but failed to build on that momentum back on their own turf.
The breakthrough came in the second half through defender Diogo Dalot, whose strike seemed to have set United on course for a vital victory. However, with just minutes remaining, Soungoutou Magassa rose highest to power home a header from a corner in the 83rd minute, securing a precious point for the struggling Hammers.
Amorim's Curt and Angry Reaction
In a terse post-match press conference, Amorim made no attempt to hide his emotions. "It's frustrating, it's angry, that's it," was his curt initial summary of the game. When pressed on how he could improve his team's performance, the Portuguese coach offered a clipped response: "It's working again and trying to win the next one."
Observers noted it was the angriest they had seen Amorim in a United press conference. He snapped back at some reporters and forcefully rejected the suggestion that his team had gone backwards in recent weeks. "It's not going backwards," he insisted. "The results are going backwards. We had some moments. That can happen... We are really inconsistent."
He pointed directly to the late goal as evidence of his team's frailties: "But if you look at the goal, 83 minutes, we have a long ball, we have everything under control and we need to do better."
Looking Ahead After a Familiar Setback
Amorim revealed he plans to debrief his players on Friday, once he has cooled down. He referenced a previous incident where he hit a giant television in the dressing room after a 3-1 loss to Brighton in January, suggesting he wanted to avoid a similar outburst. He also drew parallels with October's 4-2 win over West Ham, where United also let a commanding lead slip.
"I always have the feeling – I think everyone has the feeling – that we need to score more goals," Amorim admitted. "Even with Brighton (in October) we were 3-0 (up) and then suddenly (we conceded twice). We suffer with that, we are inconsistent and we need to improve."
United's next challenge is a trip to face winless Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, a match they cannot take for granted after failing to beat the 18th-placed side at home. Meanwhile, West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo praised his team's character and performance, stating the draw was "well deserved" after a positive reaction to going behind.
