Pop icon Miley Cyrus has offered a surprising and humorous explanation for her recent engagement to musician Maxx Morando, citing an unusual secret phobia as a key factor.
The Unconventional Engagement Reason
The 33-year-old superstar, who confirmed her engagement this week after debuting a stunning $150,000 engagement ring, appeared on Thursday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. During the interview, Cyrus revealed she has a severe aversion to paper, which she laughingly claimed influenced her decision to say 'yes'.
'I hate paper,' Cyrus told host Jimmy Kimmel, explaining that even the sight of his cue cards on the desk made her 'want to vomit.' She elaborated that 'the real problem is when people have dry hands and they touch paper.'
Fiancé's Practical Role
Because of this intense fear, Cyrus said she has tasked her now-fiancé, 27-year-old Morando, with a very specific duty. She makes him open all of her Amazon packages 'outside' their Los Angeles home when they arrive. 'That's why I got engaged. I make my fiancé open all the packages outside,' she quipped.
Kimmel reminded the singer that tradition dictates the first wedding anniversary gift is paper, to which Cyrus swiftly retorted: 'Not here.' The host then jokingly questioned whether she would even sign the marriage certificate, prompting Cyrus to reflect on her 'last marriage' to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
Reflections on Past Marriage
Cyrus recalled that the certificate from her marriage to Hemsworth, which ended in divorce in 2020 after 13 months, was on 'smooth paper,' which she deemed 'better.' She thought she remembered it being waxed, though Kimmel insisted marriage certificates are 'not waxed.'
The Flowers singer confessed she couldn't 'really remember' much about signing it because she had 'smoked one of those imaginary joints' at the time. Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship spanned a decade on and off before their short-lived marriage.
The interview began with Kimmel congratulating Cyrus on her engagement, prompting loud applause from the audience. He noted Morando's proposal timing, just weeks before Christmas, might have been a strategic gift-giving move.
Without missing a beat, Cyrus flashed her ring and joked: 'This was a Black Friday deal, baby.' She later clarified it wasn't, but praised her soon-to-be-husband for being 'smart that way.'
Cyrus was on the show to promote James Cameron's latest Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, for which she penned the ballad Dream As One. Ahead of the taping, she arrived at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre in a stylish ensemble featuring skin-tight leather pants, a fur puffer jacket, a white lace camisole, and stiletto heels.
She was accompanied by her mother, Tish Cyrus, 58, and several security guards. The former child star's dark blonde hair was styled in a Y2K-inspired bun with side bangs, and she took time to sign autographs for fans.
