Welsh football star Aaron Ramsey has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, marking the end of a distinguished career that spanned over a decade at the highest levels of the sport.
A Difficult Decision and Emotional Farewell
The former Arsenal midfielder took to Instagram to share the news with his followers, describing it as "not an easy decision to make." Ramsey wrote, "After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football" and expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his journey.
He specifically thanked the Welsh national team, where he earned 86 caps, and all seven clubs he represented during his career. Ramsey also paid tribute to his family, stating, "And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible."
Arsenal Legacy and FA Cup Triumphs
Ramsey is best remembered for his eleven-year spell at Arsenal, where he became a fan favorite and helped deliver three FA Cup trophies to the club. During his time with the Gunners, he made 369 appearances and scored 64 goals, becoming an integral part of Arsene Wenger's squad.
His career at Arsenal included memorable moments in cup competitions, though it also saw disappointment in the 2019 Europa League final where Arsenal lost to Chelsea. Ramsey's technical ability, work rate, and knack for scoring important goals made him one of the Premier League's most respected midfielders during his prime.
Post-Arsenal Career and Recent Challenges
After leaving Arsenal in 2019, Ramsey signed for Italian giants Juventus, where he won the Serie A title and made 70 appearances while scoring six goals. He subsequently had spells at Nice, Rangers, and a brief return to his boyhood club Cardiff City before his final professional engagement with Mexican side Pumas.
His time in Mexico was cut short after just six appearances, with Ramsey mutually agreeing to end his contract early. This decision came amid personal difficulties for the Ramsey family, including the distressing disappearance of their beloved pet dog Halo during their stay in Mexico.
The Missing Dog Incident in Mexico
During the family's time in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, their dog Halo went missing on October 9th while wearing a tracking collar near a local dog shelter. Ramsey shared the location on Google Maps and appealed to locals for assistance in finding their pet.
The footballer initially offered a $10,000 reward for information, later increasing it to $20,000 (£15,000) when no progress was made after a week. Despite these efforts, the family returned home to the UK without Halo, with Ramsey's wife Colleen expressing serious concerns about the disappearance and fearing they "may never get answers."
Looking Ahead to Retirement
While stepping away from professional football, Ramsey plans to remain active and is scheduled to participate in this year's TCS London Marathon on April 26th. This indicates his commitment to maintaining fitness and engaging in new challenges beyond his playing career.
Ramsey's retirement marks the end of an era for Welsh football, as he was a key figure in the national team's recent successes and a respected professional across multiple European leagues. His career trajectory from Cardiff City prospect to Arsenal star and international regular represents a remarkable journey in modern football.
