Thomas Tuchel has been left badly wounded after England's World Cup exit, with his reputation as a tactical genius shattered. The German coach's defensive approach against Argentina backfired spectacularly, leading to a chorus of criticism from former players and pundits.
Pundits Slam Tuchel's Tactics
Former England captain Wayne Rooney said the team “crumbled” under Tuchel's decisions, while Alan Shearer claimed his tactics “backfired.” BBC pundit Chris Sutton described it as a “coaching catastrophe.” Many England fans in the United States expressed disbelief at the manner of the defeat.
England looked in danger as soon as they took the lead, immediately retreating into a defensive shell. They ended up with five at the back, inviting Argentina onto them despite being at their best when on the front foot.
Possession Stat Exposes Flaws
Argentina, an ageing team with poor full backs and patched-up defence, relied on Lionel Messi's genius. Allowing Messi possession proved disastrous. The most damning stat: England had just 12 per cent possession from taking the lead to conceding the winner in injury time.
“That is shocking,” said pundits. While players share blame for poor ball retention, Tuchel must take the lion's share for negativity.
Haunted by His Own Words
In March, Tuchel said England were “afraid” to lose in the Euros and lacked “hunger and excitement” to win. That quote now haunts him, making him look daft after his own cautious tactics.
Tuchel was hired for his knockout football expertise, having led Chelsea to a Champions League final. His no-nonsense approach and good substitutions were seen as improvements over Gareth Southgate's weaknesses. But against Argentina, his subs were poor, and the magic faded.
Fan Trust Damaged
Things change quickly in football. After wins over Mexico and Norway, hope was high. Then Tuchel lost his bottle. Winning back doubting fans will be tough. The World Cup ride was wonderful, but the disappointment is bruising.
The Football Association still backs Tuchel, but his contract extension to two more years seems a mistake. He was hired win-or-bust for this World Cup. If his contract expired immediately after, would he have been so cautious? Likely not.
