Second Lady Usha Vance Opens Up on Marriage and Political Past
Second Lady Usha Vance has provided a candid glimpse into her marriage with Vice President JD Vance, detailing how she manages disagreements and how her previous Democratic affiliations influence her private counsel. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Vance, 40, shared insights into their relationship dynamics, emphasizing her role as a supportive spouse rather than a political staffer.
From Democratic Roots to Vice Presidential Partnership
Usha Vance was a registered Democrat until 2014, the same year she married JD Vance, who later became Vice President of the United States. Reflecting on this transition, she noted that her past beliefs sometimes color their discussions, but she has never felt pressured to renounce them. 'I do feel very comfortable in that no one has ever asked me to engage in any kind of litmus test on anything,' Vance stated. 'And what I've found is that I was myself in 2014. I can be myself today.'
She explained that her views can be idiosyncratic, fitting into different political sides, but her primary focus is on JD Vance's success. 'It's a world that I think is actually rather accepting of that, since everyone knows that I really care greatly about JD's success,' she added.
Navigating Disagreements in a High-Profile Marriage
Vance highlighted that while they don't always agree, their conversations remain productive. 'I'm not his staffer. I'm not involved in this in any professional sense,' she said. 'The expectation is that we are going to be open-minded and have a conversation, and that I'll provide meaningful input from, you know, the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed.'
She described their bond as close, with frequent discussions about JD Vance's priorities and concerns. 'There are conversations all the time,' Vance shared. 'I do really like to understand what's going on in his world, what he's really focused on, what concerns he has, because it's a marriage. I want to be supportive of him, and if I don't really know what's going on, then I can't do that.'
Advocating for Childhood Literacy Through New Initiatives
Beyond her personal life, Usha Vance is actively promoting childhood literacy. She recently announced a new podcast, 'Storytime With the Second Lady,' which features prominent figures like NASCAR legend Danica Patrick. The podcast includes 15-minute episodes where they read short stories and discuss themes aimed at young children.
Vance expressed concern over declining literacy rates among children, calling it 'worrisome.' 'If I was going to do anything, this would be the thing to focus on at this moment in time,' she said. This initiative builds on her previous efforts, such as last year's 'Summer Reading Challenge,' where children were encouraged to read 12 books over the break for prizes and certificates.
As a mother of three expecting a fourth child this summer, Vance's advocacy aligns with her personal commitment to education. The Vances are noted as the first second couple in decades to have young children while in office, adding a unique dimension to her public role.
