Hosts on the popular ABC daytime talk show The View have issued a forceful condemnation of former President Donald Trump over what they describe as a "blasphemous" AI-generated image that portrays him as Jesus Christ. The controversy erupted over the weekend as Trump engaged in a public feud with Pope Leo XIV, sharing the digitally altered picture on his Truth Social platform before apparently deleting it.
Outrage Over AI-Generated Depiction
The image in question shows Trump dressed in white robes with a red sash, placing his hand on the forehead of a sick man in a manner reminiscent of biblical healing scenes. During Monday's broadcast, the hosts displayed the picture on screen as they discussed Trump's recent social media posts, in which he attacked the Pope as "WEAK on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy."
Strong Reactions from Hosts
Sunny Hostin, who identifies as a devout Catholic, began the segment by referencing the 25th Amendment, which was ratified in 1967 following President John F. Kennedy's assassination and provides a mechanism for removing a president deemed unfit for office. "I think our founding fathers did a lot of things right, and the 25th Amendment is there for a reason," Hostin stated, her voice breaking with emotion as she added, "No one holds that office, which is arguably the most powerful office in the world, and does things like that."
Whoopi Goldberg intervened to request the image be removed from the screen, while Alyssa Farah Griffin provided theological context. "In the Christian faith, this is considered blasphemy: blasting yourself as Christ, elevating yourself to the level of Christ," Griffin explained. Hostin agreed emphatically, repeating, "It's blasphemous."
Political Ramifications and Base Concerns
Griffin further noted that even some of Trump's most loyal MAGA supporters had expressed discomfort with the image, urging him to take it down. She highlighted the political miscalculation of attacking the leader of the largest faith community in the United States, which also constitutes a significant portion of Trump's voter base. "This happens as he's bleeding MAGA supporters for the war in Iran," Griffin observed, suggesting the controversy comes at an inopportune time for Trump's political standing.
The Independent has reached out to the White House for comment on the matter, though no official statement has been released at this time. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between Trump and religious institutions, while raising questions about the appropriate use of artificial intelligence technology in political communication.
