London Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a stark warning that the capital is confronting a "dark blizzard of disinformation" proliferating across online platforms. He has urgently called upon the government to implement stronger measures to combat the rampant spread of false information on social media, which he argues is deliberately sowing division and fear among residents.
Alarming Data Reveals Sharp Rise in Misleading Narratives
Official data released by the Greater London Authority (GLA) paints a concerning picture of the scale of this issue. The analysis shows a significant and worrying increase in misleading narratives about London between March 2024 and March 2026. Specifically, content promoting the idea of "London in decline" has surged by an estimated 150 to 200 percent. Even more dramatically, migration-related disinformation has skyrocketed by over 350 percent during the same two-year period.
This surge is occurring despite official government statistics indicating that crime rates in London have actually been falling. The disconnect between factual data and the false narratives being amplified online is a central concern for city officials.
State Actors and Extremist Groups Behind Coordinated Campaigns
Research into the origins of this disinformation points to sophisticated, coordinated campaigns. The Mayor's office indicates that much of this inauthentic activity is being driven by:
- State actors aligned with foreign interests, including those linked to Russia and China.
- Extreme right-wing groups, some with connections to political movements in the United States.
- The use of advanced technologies, such as AI-generated content, to create and spread falsehoods more effectively.
These actors are systematically targeting key social issues to destabilise public trust. The most frequent misleading narratives focus on:
- Migration and cultural identity within the city.
- The safety of London, with false claims about phone-snatching, violence against women, and knife crime.
- Hateful content, including antisemitic and homophobic material.
Mayor Khan Demands Government Action and Stronger Regulation
In response to this growing threat, Mayor Khan is demanding a tougher governmental approach. He has outlined specific proposals to curb the influence of disinformation:
"We cannot allow social media companies to profit from division," Khan stated. His key recommendations include:
- The creation of a new centralised government body dedicated solely to combating disinformation and coordinated inauthentic behaviour online.
