California Governor Gavin Newsom has launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump, branding his family as serial grifters after it was revealed that Trump's planned presidential library in Miami is set to function primarily as a luxury hotel. The Democratic governor, widely viewed as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, did not mince words in his criticism of the controversial proposal.
Newsom's Blistering Critique of Trump's Library Plans
Governor Newsom took to social media platform X to express his outrage, writing: "All this family does is grift off the government. Has any family relied more on the government than the Trumps?" His comments came in direct response to Trump's announcement that his presidential library would break from traditional models by incorporating hotel operations.
The proposed 47-floor structure, which would be erected on a prized 2.6-acre plot of public land in downtown Miami, has drawn significant scrutiny. According to reports from Politico, the land was donated by Florida after Miami Dade College voted to transfer the parcel to the state, raising questions about the use of public resources for private enterprise.
Trump's Unconventional Library Vision
In a statement to reporters, Trump declared: "I don't believe in building libraries or museums. It's most likely going to be a hotel with a beautiful building underneath and a 747 Air Force One in the lobby." This departure from conventional presidential libraries, which typically serve as archives and educational centres, has sparked controversy across political circles.
The Daily Beast reported that revenue generated from the hotel operations would be directed to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Fund, which would be overseen by members of the Trump family. Trump assured that construction would not commence until after he leaves office, promising the project would be completed "on time, on budget."
Architectural Renderings and Controversial Features
Trump recently shared an AI-generated video showcasing his vision for the library, which bears a striking resemblance to One World Trade Center in New York City. The colossal tower, potentially reaching 47 stories to symbolise Trump being the nation's 47th president, features several notable elements:
- A red-white-and-blue spire with "TRUMP" emblazoned across the upper floors
- An exterior accented with an American flag, palm trees, reflective pools, and an enormous gilded entrance
- A lobby housing a 747 aircraft, potentially the same $400 million plane gifted to Trump by Qatar
- A cavernous auditorium featuring an oversized golden statue of Trump with his fist raised defiantly
- Recreations of Trump's Oval Office and his under-construction ballroom
Notably absent from the video were any traditional library elements such as books or archival materials, raising questions about the facility's educational purpose.
Comparisons to Dictatorial Monuments
Governor Newsom specifically targeted the golden statue featured in the renderings, posting images comparing it to monuments of dictators Mao Zedong and Kim Jong Un. "Looks awfully familiar to a few others from around the world," Newsom remarked, drawing parallels between Trump's self-aggrandising imagery and authoritarian propaganda.
Broader Context of Presidential Libraries
The United States currently hosts 16 presidential libraries and museums, documenting administrations from Herbert Hoover to Joe Biden according to the National Archives. Texas holds the distinction of hosting the most presidential libraries, including those of Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. If completed, Trump's library would become Florida's first presidential library.
Trump used the announcement as an opportunity to criticise former President Barack Obama's recently completed presidential centre in Chicago, claiming it was "seriously over budget." This comparison further highlighted the unconventional nature of Trump's proposed facility, which prioritises commercial operations over traditional archival functions.
The controversy surrounding Trump's library-hotel hybrid reflects broader debates about the appropriate use of public resources and the legacy preservation of presidential administrations. As political tensions continue to simmer, Newsom's vocal criticism positions him as a leading Democratic voice against what he characterises as Trump family exploitation of government systems for personal gain.
