Independent Member of Parliament Zali Steggall has become the target of a vicious online harassment campaign, culminating in serious death threats, following criticism from prominent American conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The situation escalated dramatically after Kirk, founder of the right-wing organisation Turning Point USA, directly targeted Ms. Steggall on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). His post, which criticised her political stance, unleashed a wave of vitriol from his substantial following.
A Torrent of Online Abuse
Ms. Steggall, the independent member for Warringah, reported receiving hundreds of threatening and abusive messages. The MP described the content as deeply disturbing, noting explicit threats of violence and death.
"The nature of the comments has been absolutely reprehensible," Ms. Steggall stated. "It moved far beyond political disagreement into direct threats against my personal safety. This is completely unacceptable behaviour."
Police Investigation Underway
In response to the serious nature of the threats, the matter has been formally referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for investigation. Security assessments are being conducted to ensure the safety of Ms. Steggall and her staff.
"No public figure should have to endure threats of violence simply for doing their job," a spokesperson for the AFP confirmed. "We are taking this matter extremely seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation."
