Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy has firmly denied rumours that he will play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television series. In an interview with The Times, Murphy said: 'I’m categorically not. Can you make that the headline?'
The Peaky Blinders star had previously stated he 'didn't know anything about' the speculation and suggested it would be 'really hard' to follow Ralph Fiennes's portrayal of the Dark Lord in the film adaptations. However, Fiennes recently said at an event that he believed Murphy had been cast, calling him a 'very good choice'.
Murphy's latest denial suggests Fiennes may have simply repeated online rumours. The role of Voldemort may not yet be cast, as the character does not appear until the fourth book, which would be adapted in the series' fourth season if current plans hold.
The first season, covering The Philosopher's Stone, is expected to premiere in early 2027 on HBO Max. HBO boss Casey Bloys indicated the release would be 'early' that year.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter author JK Rowling continues to face backlash over her views on transgender rights. Actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have distanced themselves from her stance, while Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jim Broadbent have defended her.
