King Charles is reportedly 'excited' about celebrating the 'connection' between the United Kingdom and the United States, despite the complexities of the upcoming state visit, according to a palace source. Just hours before the King and Queen Camilla land in Washington DC for a four-day state visit, they are set to meet US President Donald Trump five times.
Controversial Trip Amid Verbal Attacks
The visit comes amid a series of verbal attacks by Trump on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, following the UK and other NATO allies' refusal to join the US-led war in Iran. Trump has described Starmer as 'no Winston Churchill' and branded the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers as 'toys'.
Fresh controversy has also emerged over reports that the US may review its position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands as punishment for Starmer's lack of support for military action against Tehran.
Schedule of Events
During the four-day trip, the King and Queen will have tea with Trump and first lady Melania, attend a state dinner at the White House where Charles will give a speech, and visit the 9/11 memorial in New York. Events are also planned in Virginia, including a block party, before the King visits the British overseas territory of Bermuda.
A palace source told The Times: 'We're optimistic about the visit while acknowledging the complexities and challenges that it presents. But overall, Their Majesties are excited about a programme that celebrates the connection between two nations and two peoples.' The King is expected to call for unity in a speech to Congress on Tuesday, which has been drafted with government advice.
Informal Tone and Key Topics
The visit is reported to have an 'informal' feel, with guests at a Washington garden party told hats are not encouraged, and the state dinner reportedly not featuring tiaras. Trump has stated he plans to discuss 'everything' with the King, including the Iran war, which has strained transatlantic relations, as well as NATO and the UK's digital services tax on American social media firms.
Earlier this week, Trump also claimed that Prince Harry 'is not speaking for the UK' after the Duke of Sussex urged the US to honor its obligations in the Ukraine war. Responding to Harry's speech during a surprise visit to Ukraine, Trump told reporters: 'I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that's for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry. But I appreciate his advice very much.' He added, 'How's he doing? How's his wife? Please give her my regards.'
Harry delivered a passionate speech at the Kyiv Security Forum, stating he was 'not here as a politician' but as 'a soldier who understands service' and a 'humanitarian'. He urged 'American leadership' to 'honour its international treaty obligations' in its 'enduring role in global security'.
The President previously indicated that the King and Queen's visit could 'absolutely' help mend relations with the UK damaged over the Iran war.
