Memorial services commemorating the life of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. are being expanded beyond Chicago to include events in Washington, D.C., and South Carolina, as announced by his organization on Thursday. This expansion reflects the broad impact of the civil rights leader, who passed away earlier this week at age 84 after a prolonged battle with a rare neurological disorder that impaired his movement and speech.
Expanded Memorial Schedule
Formal services have been added from March 1 to March 4 in Washington, D.C., and South Carolina, where Jackson was born and raised. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Jackson's organization, has not released further details about these events. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Jackson will lie in repose at the Rainbow PUSH headquarters, with a public celebration of life scheduled for March 6 at the House of Hope, a 10,000-seat church, followed by private homegoing services on March 7 at Rainbow PUSH, which will be livestreamed for public viewing.
Family and Legacy
Jackson's adult children gathered outside the family home in Chicago on Wednesday, emphasizing that the funeral services would be large, inclusive gatherings welcoming all. They pledged to continue his decades of advocacy for social justice. Santita Jackson, his eldest child, stated, "Although his body is absent from us, his spirit suffuses and infuses us, and it charges us to continue with the work."
Historical Significance
Jackson rose to prominence six decades ago as a protégé of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., participating in the historic voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. King later sent Jackson to Chicago to launch Operation Breadbasket, an initiative under the Southern Christian Leadership Conference aimed at pressuring companies to hire Black workers. Jackson was with King on April 4, 1968, when the civil rights leader was assassinated, marking a pivotal moment in his own journey.
As a two-time presidential candidate, Jackson's legacy spans civil rights activism, political engagement, and community organizing. The expanded memorial services in multiple locations underscore his national influence and the enduring commitment to his causes by his family and supporters.
