An investigation has been launched into a fire that broke out at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Sunday morning, just one day after an anti-war rally took place at the base. The blaze, which started around 1am, consumed a storage building and was tackled by multiple fire crews.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service described the fire as 'accidental', with early indications suggesting no foul play. No injuries were reported, and the fire was brought under control safely. Crews remained at the scene as a precaution.
The US Air Force, which operates from RAF Fairford, confirmed the fire posed no risk to the base or local community. A spokesperson said: 'An investigation has been initiated and is ongoing. More information will be released as it becomes available.'
RAF Fairford has been used by the US Air Force since March, when Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer authorised its use for 'defensive' strikes. The base's role in the Iran conflict has drawn criticism, with around 200 protesters gathering on Saturday for a peaceful demonstration. Protesters carried signs reading 'US out of British bases' and 'Stop Trump's deadly wars'.
RAF Fairford is one of only two bases in Europe capable of accommodating all three types of US long-range bombers. The fire investigation continues.
