Former Liberal MP and Doctor Katie Allen Dies at 59 After Cancer Battle
Former Liberal MP Katie Allen Dies Aged 59

The Australian political community is in mourning following the death of former federal Liberal MP and respected doctor, Katie Allen, at the age of 59.

A Life of Service Cut Short

Dr Allen's family announced her passing in a heartfelt statement posted to her Facebook account on Tuesday. She died surrounded by family after a private struggle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as cholangiocarcinoma, which affects the bile ducts.

Before entering politics, Allen built a distinguished medical career as a paediatric allergist and gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She transitioned to public service, representing the Victorian seat of Higgins as a Liberal MP from 2019 until 2022.

Private Battle and Political Courage

Allen received her cancer diagnosis in November 2023 but chose to keep it largely private, sharing the news only with close family until after the federal election in May. During that election, she made an unsuccessful bid for the seat of Chisholm.

She later revealed to The Age that she had kept her illness secret to avoid what she termed the "sympathy vote," encouraged by her husband, Malcolm, to continue pursuing her political ambitions. She is survived by Malcolm, their four children, and one grandchild.

Cross-Party Tributes for a 'Trailblazer'

Condolences have flowed from across the political spectrum, highlighting the deep respect she commanded. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Allen for dedicating "her life, her talents and her courage to making our nation a better place."

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley described her as a "trailblazer," celebrated for her "exceptional intellect, courage and warmth." Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, under whom she served, acknowledged her "extraordinary talents, passion and love," noting her unwavering focus on helping others.

Other notable figures paying tribute include:

  • Former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, who called her "brave, bright and beautiful."
  • Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who recognised her as an "amazing mother and wife, gifted doctor and passionate community advocate."
  • Liberal Senator James McGrath, who told Radio National that "to know Katie was to love Katie and to love life."

Defence Minister Richard Marles, several shadow ministers, and crossbench MP Allegra Spender also added their voices to the outpouring of respect and grief. Allen's family remembered her simply as "our beloved Katie (Mum)," a woman who "spent her life caring for others."
