DUP MLA Gary Middleton Resigns to Focus on Mental Health Recovery
DUP's Gary Middleton Steps Down as MLA for Mental Health

Democratic Unionist Party MLA Gary Middleton has announced his resignation from the Northern Ireland Assembly, stepping back from public life to concentrate on addressing significant mental health challenges. The Foyle representative confirmed he will formally resign his position on Friday, ending a political career that began when he was elected as a councillor at just twenty years of age.

Public Statement on Health Struggles

In a candid statement released to the Press Association, Mr Middleton revealed he has been suffering from a prolonged bout of ill-health that has substantially limited his ability to effectively represent his constituents. "I had hoped to be able to return to work and to recover," he explained, "but I have come to the point of accepting that if I am to focus on getting back to full health, I cannot do this whilst remaining in public office."

The MLA emphasized that while it would have been easier to withdraw quietly from politics, he wanted his constituents and the wider community to understand the specific reasons behind his departure. "I wanted my constituents and the wider community to understand that I am leaving public life because I am suffering significant mental health challenges," Mr Middleton stated.

Journey Through Difficult Experience

Mr Middleton described himself as "journeying through a difficult experience" that has persisted for some time. He acknowledged receiving treatment through National Health Service provisions, expressing gratitude for the support system that has provided hope during challenging times. "The support and encouragement from my family and friends, combined with the expert treatment I am receiving has given me hope and I can see a glimmer of light in what has been a very dark tunnel," he shared.

In making his personal struggles public, the departing MLA aimed to encourage others facing similar challenges. "In making this statement I want to give encouragement to those who may be on a similar journey by highlighting that help is available," he said, adding the important message: "I have learned in recent times that it's okay not to be okay."

Political Career and Tributes

Gary Middleton has served as an MLA in the Northern Ireland Assembly since 2015, following his initial election to local government in May 2011. As the sole unionist MLA in Foyle, he developed a reputation as a consistent voice for unionism in the region. DUP leader Gavin Robinson paid tribute to his colleague, describing him as a "dedicated and steadfast servant to people across the city of Londonderry and surrounding areas."

Mr Robinson highlighted Middleton's political courage, noting that "Gary has at times faced threats from republicans" during his tenure. "That pressure never silenced him nor deterred him," the DUP leader emphasized, "he continued to stand firm for his constituents and his principles."

Support and Future Focus

The DUP leader expressed regret at Middleton's departure from public service while affirming the party's support for his recovery journey. "Gary's focus must now be on his recovery, and he will have the support of colleagues, both inside and outside our ranks, on his journey," Mr Robinson stated.

In his farewell statement, Mr Middleton expressed gratitude to constituents, colleagues, staff, and particularly his family. "I want to thank all those who have supported me in Foyle over the years and who bestowed the privilege of electing me, first into local government and then to the Northern Ireland Assembly," he said. The departing MLA concluded with well-wishes for all public servants, regardless of party affiliation, as he prepares to leave the political stage to prioritize his mental health and personal wellbeing.
