A pub in West Yorkshire has apologised after a quiz team name was deemed anti-Semitic, just days after two people were stabbed in north London. The team reportedly called themselves 'Golders Green should be Golders Greed' during a quiz at The Crown in Boston Spa.
The name was accepted by staff and announced as the winner without objection. A local resident, who heard about the incident from a family member, complained to the pub, saying they felt 'ashamed' to call it their local. The complainant, who is not Jewish, described the name as 'outrageous', 'insensitive', and 'racist', adding that it 'incites hatred'.
A manager from The Crown said the pub was reviewing the incident with the quiz team and staff to ensure more care is taken over team names in future. 'We are very sorry that this team name caused offence and distress,' the manager told the Telegraph. 'The name should not have been accepted and we take concerns about discrimination and inclusivity very seriously.'
The incident comes after two men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, on April 29. Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with the attempted murder of Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shine, 76, as well as a third man, Ishmail Hussein, in Southwark. Suleiman appeared in court on May 1 and is being held in custody until a hearing at the Old Bailey on May 15.
