Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has called for restraint in comparing rising Formula One star Kimi Antonelli with tennis champion Jannik Sinner, warning that the Italian public's heightened expectations could place undue pressure on the 19-year-old driver.
Antonelli Extends Championship Lead
Antonelli secured his third consecutive victory of the Formula One season at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, extending his world championship lead to 20 points. The triumph came on the same day that Italian tennis world number one Jannik Sinner claimed his fifth straight Masters 1000 title at the Madrid Open.
An intriguing pattern has emerged, with all of Antonelli's race wins this season coinciding with Sinner's victories in Masters 1000 events. This has sparked comparisons between the two Italian sports stars, who have become focal points for a nation hungry for success following the Italian football team's failure to qualify for a third successive World Cup.
Wolff Urges Caution
Speaking after the Miami Grand Prix, Wolff emphasised the need to keep Antonelli grounded amid the intense media and public scrutiny. "We must play the long game with Kimi," Wolff said. "His family and the team play a crucial role in ensuring he does not become overwhelmed by early success."
The Mercedes boss stressed that while Antonelli's performances have been exceptional, it is essential to manage expectations and allow the young driver to develop at his own pace. "Comparisons with Jannik Sinner are flattering, but Kimi is on his own journey. We need to protect him from the hype and focus on steady progress," Wolff added.
