Barstool Founder's Stance on Beverley's Future
Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, has publicly addressed the future of podcaster and former NBA star Patrick Beverley, following Beverley's arrest in Texas last Friday. Portnoy stated that while he initially preferred to stand by his employee, the emergence of a detailed police report has forced his hand, leading to Beverley being placed on forced leave from the company.
The Allegations and Arrest Details
The 37-year-old former Milwaukee Bucks point guard was taken into custody in Fort Bend County, Texas, and is facing a serious charge of Assault on a Family Member or Household Member Impeding Breath or Circulation. According to police documents, the incident involved Beverley's teenage sister. The minor allegedly left the family home in Richmond, Texas, without permission to visit her boyfriend, identified as 18-year-old Aiden Hilderbrand.
Upon her return, a confrontation ensued. The police affidavit claims that Beverley was called to the scene and subsequently grabbed his sister by the neck, lifting her off the ground for 20-30 seconds. It is further alleged that he then slammed her against walls and, while she was on a sofa, stood on top of her and punched her in the left eye.
The report also states that Beverley told his sister 'he will be the family relative to kill her'. After police arrived and observed injuries consistent with the allegations, including marks on her neck and blood spots under the skin around her eye, Beverley was arrested. He was later released from jail after posting a $40,000 bond.
Portnoy's Evolving Position and Beverley's Defence
Initially, Portnoy expressed reluctance to sever ties immediately, stating in a livestream that Barstool tends to 'stick with our guys until there’s a reason not to'. However, his position shifted after reviewing the police report, which he described as 'obviously horrific' and 'brutal'.
On Barstool's The Unnamed Show, Portnoy clarified the current situation: 'He is taking forced time away from Barstool... we can't have him be a part of what we're doing right now'. He added a definitive condition for Beverley's return, stating, 'If there's any truth to it, he won't be back at Barstool'. Portnoy indicated he would await the outcome of a court case before making a final decision.
Beverley, through his attorney Letitia Quinones-Hollins, has refuted all allegations. In a statement provided to TMZ and posted on Beverley's Instagram, his attorney asserted that 'Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night'. The statement explained that Beverley was 'understandably concerned' after finding his minor sister with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night and looks forward to addressing the matter in court.
Beverley, who last played in the NBA in 2024 and most recently featured for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, has hosted The Pat Bev Podcast on Barstool's platforms since 2022.
