Romanian Shoplifting Gang Sentenced for £200,000 UK Crime Spree

In a dramatic police operation, a prolific Romanian shoplifting gang has been brought to justice after stealing nearly £200,000 worth of goods across the United Kingdom. The trio, responsible for 120 offences, were arrested in Hounslow, West London, with bodycam footage capturing the moment officers detained them. The arrests and subsequent sentencing are featured in the latest episode of the Channel 5 documentary series 'Police Interceptors: Taking Down the Shoplifting Gangs'.

Arrests and Police Raid in Hounslow

Surrey Police officers executed a raid on a property in Hounslow, where they arrested Nicolae Boia, 30, and Oviliv Firan, 38, on suspicion of conspiracy to steal. A third gang member, Laura Miron, 27, had already been apprehended while attempting to flee the UK for Ireland during the investigation, codenamed 'Operation Even'. During the raid, Boia was found dressed only in shorts and told officers, 'No speak English,' to which a policewoman replied, 'No, OK?' before placing him in handcuffs. Firan was arrested in another room, and both were swiftly transported in a police van as detectives searched the premises for stolen items.

Vast Evidence and Gang Operations

Police uncovered hundreds of stolen goods, including beauty products, electrical items like Sony headphones and Google Home devices, memory sticks, cigarettes, toothbrushes, cables, make-up, wine, spirits, and champagne. Surrey Police Constable Zoe Dodd described the challenge of handling the case, stating, 'I had never taken on a job this big before. The problem with the case files was the vast amount of evidence we had. We had so many jobs up and down the UK with so many bits of CCTV. It was just trying to watch it all and trying to figure out which part each member played on that particular date.' The gang targeted large supermarkets such as Tesco, focusing on high-value items like razors, alcohol, fragrances, and electric goods. In their most lucrative theft, they stole champagne worth over £4,500 in a single spree.

Sentencing and Broader Criminal Network

All three suspects pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal at Guildford Crown Court on October 28, 2024, after initially denying the charges. They were sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on November 8, 2024. Boia received two years and 11 months in prison, Firan was jailed for three and a half years, and Miron was sentenced to three years and three months. Chief Superintendent Juliet Parker highlighted the broader implications, noting, 'Often many lines of crime that they follow, retail crime being one of them, and the funds from that are often ploughed into other areas of criminality.' The gang was part of a larger organised crime network responsible for around 800 offences across the UK, with crimes linked from Poole and Portsmouth in the south to Chorley and Wigan in the north.

Documentary Insights and National Impact

The Channel 5 documentary provides an in-depth look at the police investigation, including interviews with the suspects. During questioning at Staines police station, Miron and Firan gave 'no comment' responses, while Boia answered some questions through a Romanian interpreter, denying any coordinated theft efforts. The programme also reveals that Miron's arrest at the border forced police to accelerate their operations to prevent the other gang members from fleeing. This case underscores a national issue, with a police unit, Operation Opal, identifying over 20 gangs and 200 criminals involved in shoplifting across Britain, many suspected of being East European and linked to human trafficking and exploitation.

The documentary 'Police Interceptors: Taking Down the Shoplifting Gangs' continues on Channel 5, offering viewers a glimpse into the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat organised retail crime.
