Katie Price has confirmed that her husband, Lee Andrews, is being held in Dubai Central Jail, also known as Al Awir prison, after she received a two-minute phone call from him. The former glamour model, 47, said Andrews was detained on 14 May on suspicion of espionage and that he called her to say he was alive and okay.
Al Awir prison, the emirate's primary correctional facility, has a reputation for poor conditions. Reports from former inmates and human rights groups describe overcrowding, lack of medical care, and unhygienic surroundings. Detained in Dubai, a support group, notes that new arrivals often sleep on the floor without a bed.
Human Rights Watch has documented violations including denial of HIV treatment to non-national detainees. Former British inmates have alleged sexual abuse, rape, and violent clashes. Karl Williams, imprisoned in 2012, called it the 'Dubai version of Alcatraz', while Albert Douglas claimed guards burned a man's genitals and hung boys upside down for fun.
Dubai authorities have consistently denied these allegations. Andrews remains in custody, with Price saying she knows little more than that he is accused of being a spy.
