Home Alone House Owner Found Dead After Arrest

John Abendshien, the 79-year-old former owner of the iconic house featured in the film Home Alone, has been found dead in a nature preserve in Lake Forest, Illinois. His death occurred just days after he was charged with seven felony offenses related to the possession of child sexual abuse material.

Circumstances of Death

Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Abendshien died from asphyxia in a manner consistent with being self-inflicted. Investigators have stated they do not suspect foul play. The body was discovered at a local nature preserve, prompting an immediate investigation by authorities.

Legal Proceedings

Abendshien had been taken into custody following a search warrant executed as part of an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigation, which was supported by cyber tips. He attended a court hearing where a petition to detain him was denied, and he was subsequently released under certain conditions. The charges stemmed from allegations of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the connection with the beloved holiday film. The house, located in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka, was used as the primary filming location for the McCallister family home in Home Alone. Abendshien purchased the property in 2012 and sold it in 2024.

Authorities have not released further details, and the investigation into his death continues. The Lake Forest Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward.
