In a tragic incident in Bristol, Joanne Shaw, 35, has been hailed as a hero after she instructed a child to play on a trampoline in the garden moments before a grenade explosion claimed her life. The blast occurred at her home in the Frenchay area early Sunday morning, also killing her former partner, Ryan Kelly, 41.
Neighbour Recounts Heroic Act
Stuart Blanchard, a neighbour, described the events: “I spoke to the guy who called 999 and he said the child was out on the trampoline. It will haunt [them]. She probably told [the child] to go out there to get out of the way of them arguing. I was woken to her shouting ‘go away, go away’ and then there was this loud boom that shook my door and windows.”
Police Confirm Homicide
Avon and Somerset Police have registered Joanne Shaw’s death as a homicide. Superintendent Matt Ebbs stated: “We know people will be shocked and upset to learn of the horrendous events that happened on Sunday morning. Jo’s death has been officially recorded as a homicide based on the information known to us at this time. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.” The force has referred itself to the police watchdog due to a history of domestic incidents involving the couple.
Kelly’s Criminal Past
Ryan Kelly had a prior conviction for his role in a Breaking Bad-style drugs gang. In 2015, he was sentenced to five years for conspiracy to supply cocaine. The gang, led by a 78-year-old man with cancer, planned to manufacture crystal meth but was foiled by undercover police.
Community in Shock
Neighbours expressed their shock and sorrow. Michael Gwyther said: “I just heard a blast, I thought someone was trying to kick through the door. They have been quiet recently. It was frightening and it set the dog right off.” Kwestan Ahmed added: “I heard screaming and shouting, but I’m not sure if it was them or the police. I thought the bang was a car crash, I’d never think it could be a bomb.”
A friend of Joanne’s mother commented: “I’m afraid I just knew it had to be him because of what’s gone on with him before. She was the loveliest, kindest lady and she didn’t deserve this.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police activity continues at the property on Sterncourt Road, expected to last several days. Authorities have assured the public there is no wider safety risk and the incident is not terrorism-related.
