Dan Walker Confronts Tribunal Over Serious Workplace Allegations
Presenter Dan Walker is scheduled to appear at an employment tribunal later this month, following allegations of sexism, misogyny, and workplace bullying. The former BBC Breakfast host will face his former Channel 5 News co-anchor, Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije, at a hearing in London commencing on 20 April. Proceedings are anticipated to extend for up to five weeks, drawing significant media attention.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Walker, aged 49, who joined Channel 5 News in April 2022, is named as a respondent in the case alongside ITN, the producer of the programme, and Channel 5's parent company, Paramount. Ms Vanderpuije, aged 47, departed Channel 5 in 2024 after six years on the programme and has brought forward these claims based on her experiences working alongside Walker during her final year at the broadcaster.
Walker has vehemently denied all allegations. An ITN spokesperson stated to the Mirror: "This claim, which is denied in full, will be addressed through the tribunal process." The case is expected to involve extensive witness statements and legal arguments.
Who Is Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije?
Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije was born on 5 April 1979 in West Kensington, London, and is of Ghanaian heritage. She attended Queen Mary University of London, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in History and later completed a Master's degree in Journalism. Her career in media began with roles at ITN News as an assistant and the Press Association before moving into presenting.
She is best known for her work on Channel 5, joining 5 News as a presenter in 2018. Additionally, she has worked for VOX Africa, ITV, the BBC, London Live, Sky News, and served as a weekend presenter on Talkradio. In her personal life, she was married to IT specialist Aaron Edele Armah, with whom she shares two children, and she announced her divorce in April 2024.
Allegations and Legal Representation
Ms Vanderpuije claims she was subjected to a "sham redundancy" after blowing the whistle on a toxic culture within the Channel 5 Newsroom, alleging pervasive racism, sexism, misogyny, and bullying. She further asserts that editorial content reflected this "racist culture" and that ITN and Channel 5 attempted to cover it up, breaching obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and Ofcom licensing terms.
She is represented by lawyer Jonathan Coad, who previously acted for Philip Schofield, and has attempted to settle the complaint twice without success. Vanderpuije has also engaged with her Instagram followers, seeking support and sharing details about the allegations.
Walker's Defence and Upcoming Trial
In response, an insider indicated that there will be "tonnes of witness statements" to defend Walker's character. Speaking to The Telegraph last year, Walker commented: "I haven’t really talked about it, but that was fully investigated and everything was completely incorrect and I was entirely vindicated by an independent inquiry." He added that he does not recognise the allegations and remains confident in his integrity.
However, these assertions are disputed and are expected to be thoroughly examined during the tribunal. The hearing promises to be a high-profile event, shedding light on workplace practices in broadcast media.
