Former Channel 5 Presenter Alleges Racist Culture in Newsroom
Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije, the former Channel 5 News presenter, has made serious allegations against the broadcaster, claiming it fosters a "toxic culture of racism, sexism, misogyny and bullying." These claims emerge as she prepares to face her former co-anchor Dan Walker at an employment tribunal hearing scheduled for April 2026.
Employment Tribunal Set for April Following Bullying Allegations
According to reports from Sunday, 12 April 2026, Dan Walker will appear at an employment tribunal this month over bullying allegations lodged by Vanderpuije. The two presenters co-hosted 5 News together until 2024, when Vanderpuije departed the channel after a five-year tenure. Walker, who joined Channel 5 News in 2022 after leaving BBC Breakfast, has firmly denied all allegations against him.
In a statement issued on Vanderpuije's behalf, her lawyer Jonathan Coad asserted that ITN, the producer of the show, and Channel 5 attempted to "cover up the racist culture" within the newsroom. Coad told the Daily Mail, "Claudia-Liza claims that she was the victim of a sham redundancy because as a whistleblower she made protected disclosures alleging that a toxic culture of racism, sexism, misogyny and bullying existed in the Channel 5 Newsroom, and that its editorial content reflected its racist culture."
Previous Investigation Cleared Walker of Wrongdoing
Channel 5 initiated an investigation in 2024 after Walker became the subject of a "multi-pronged" complaint from a colleague. Independent investigators concluded that there was "a lack of evidence to support allegations," and none of the claims were upheld. A Channel 5 spokesperson confirmed this outcome at the time, and Walker later stated in an interview with The Telegraph that he was "entirely vindicated by an independent inquiry."
Despite this, Vanderpuije's legal team maintains that the culture issues persist. A source close to Walker told The Mail on Sunday that he "absolutely denies any sexism, misogyny, racism or bullying" and that the allegations have been "hanging over him for some years now." The source added, "He will be at London Central tribunal later this month. Nobody wants this but he will be there to tell the judge the truth. There will be tons of witness statements, which will talk to Dan’s character. He has been absolutely stunned with the amount of people willing to support him."
Vanderpuije's Career and Public Statements
Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije joined Channel 5 in 2018, hosting programmes such as 5 News Tonight, 5 News at 5, and occasionally The Wright Stuff. She spent one year presenting alongside Walker before her exit in 2024. Following her departure, Vanderpuije drew parallels between her situation and that of Hollywood actress Blake Lively, who accused her co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment in 2024.
Vanderpuije posted a quote from Lively, which read, "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Reflecting on this, Vanderpuije added, "Never in my wildest nightmares did I think I would be living the same life, speaking EXACTLY the same words as a Hollywood actress. It is deeply upsetting to see how women are silenced and our names smeared simply because we speak out protecting others and calling out wrongdoing."
For legal reasons, Vanderpuije has stated she cannot comment further on her claims until the trial. The Independent has reached out to Vanderpuije, Walker, and ITN for additional comments, but responses are pending as the tribunal approaches.
