South Korean Police Seek Arrest of BTS Agency Founder in $100M Fraud Probe

South Korean authorities have escalated their investigation into music mogul Bang Si-Hyuk, the billionaire founder of HYBE, the agency behind global K-pop sensation BTS. Police confirmed on Tuesday that they are seeking an arrest warrant for Mr Bang over allegations he illegally gained more than $100 million through an investor fraud scheme.

Expanding Investigation into Alleged Financial Misconduct

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has formally requested prosecutors to obtain a court warrant for Mr Bang's arrest. This development marks a significant expansion of an investigation that began in November, focusing on allegations that Mr Bang misled investors in 2019 by falsely claiming HYBE had no plans to go public.

According to police, Mr Bang allegedly induced investors to sell their shares to a private equity fund before the company proceeded with its initial public offering. Investigators believe the fund may have paid Mr Bang approximately 200 billion won (equivalent to $136 million) in a side deal that promised him 30 percent of post-IPO stock sale profits.

Powerful Figure in Global Music Industry

Mr Bang, who founded HYBE as Big Hit Entertainment in 2005, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the K-pop industry. Beyond BTS, he oversees numerous popular acts including Seventeen, Le Sserafim, and Katseye, making HYBE a dominant force in global entertainment.

The legal proceedings represent a substantial public relations challenge for HYBE, particularly as BTS embarks on a highly anticipated global tour following a nearly four-year hiatus during which members completed mandatory military service. The group recently performed for tens of thousands of international fans at a free comeback concert in Seoul and has held multiple concerts in Goyang city and Tokyo.

Timing Coincides with Major BTS Comeback

The investigation's escalation comes at a critical moment for BTS, who are scheduled to kick off a series of US events with a concert in Tampa, Florida later this month. This timing amplifies the potential impact of the legal proceedings on both the agency's reputation and the group's highly publicized return to global touring.

Representatives of HYBE did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the arrest warrant application. The case continues to develop as prosecutors consider the police request and the court evaluates whether to issue the warrant for Mr Bang's arrest.
