Alan Shearer Launches £1 Million Mission to Support Disabled Children

England football legend Alan Shearer has initiated a £1 million fundraising campaign, dubbed the 'Million Pound Mission', to assist thousands of disabled children and adults. This effort marks the largest-ever fundraising drive in the 20-year history of the Alan Shearer Foundation, providing crucial funding to maintain free access to the Alan Shearer Centre for individuals with complex disabilities.

Expanding Support for Growing Demand

Shearer, 55, has already raised £7 million over the years, but with demand for the centre's services surging to nearly 10,000 members, he is now focusing on constructing a new hydrotherapy pool. The latest £1 million initiative aims to increase capacity, reduce waiting times, and ensure more families receive the specialist care they require. The centre, located in West Denton, Newcastle, is the only charity-run facility in the region offering this level of support completely free of charge, benefiting over 5,000 people with profound disabilities.

A Personal Commitment Beyond Football

In a heartfelt statement, Shearer emphasized that his work at the centre holds more significance to him than any of his football achievements, including scoring for England, captaining the team, and winning the Premier League. He said, "Twenty years ago, we started something that has changed thousands of lives. But demand is growing fast, and standing still isn't an option. If more families need us, then we have to step up again. This mission is about building for the next twenty years, and I'm asking people to 'raise your hand' and be part of that."

Campaign Launch and Symbolism

The fundraising campaign officially launches on April 17, a date chosen to commemorate Shearer's final professional goal, scored in Newcastle United's 4–1 Tyne-Wear derby victory over Sunderland. Inspired by his famous goal celebration—a right arm salute seen 260 times during his career—the initiative encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to participate through fundraising, partnerships, and donations. This celebration has become the symbol of the Alan Shearer Foundation, integral to their charitable efforts.

Vital Services and Ongoing Needs

The centre, part of the charity St Cuthbert's Care, offers life-enhancing therapies such as hydrotherapy and sensory play, with annual running costs of £320,000. Shearer's dedication underscores the centre's role as a vital resource for families, highlighting the ongoing need for support in the community. As demand continues to rise, this mission represents a critical step in securing the future of essential services for disabled individuals across the region.
