Paralympian Sammi Kinghorn Announces Pregnancy with Heartwarming Instagram Video

Countryfile presenter and Paralympic wheelchair racer Sammi Kinghorn has announced she is expecting her first child with husband Callum Aitken. The 30-year-old athlete shared an adorable video on Instagram on Monday, revealing the happy news to her followers.

Joyful Announcement and Baby Bump Reveal

In the touching video, Sammi and Callum, who married in January 2025, are seen embracing as she drapes knitted baby socks and a sonogram over his shoulders. The clip then shows Callum putting on a 'Dad' cap before Sammi appears from behind him wearing a matching 'Mum' hat. The couple share a passionate kiss as Callum lifts Sammi in celebration.

'Half of me and half of you! We can’t wait to meet you in July,' Sammi captioned the emotional announcement. The following day, she posted another video showing her baby bump for the first time, humorously captioning it: 'Rocking the Winnie the Pooh look in my training kit.'

From Devastating Accident to Paralympic Glory

Sammi's journey to this joyful moment has been marked by extraordinary resilience. At just 14 years old, she was paralysed from the waist down in a tragic accident on her family's farm in the Scottish Borders in 2010. While helping clear snow, Sammi was crushed by a forklift operated by her father Neill, who didn't realise she had climbed onto the vehicle.

'I remember feeling this pressure on my neck,' Sammi recalled in a 2023 interview. 'I started to laugh; I thought Dad was joking. Then I started screaming. I felt my back popping and before I knew it my head was in my crotch. I was crushed right down into a tiny ball.'

In the immediate aftermath, Sammi hid the truth from her parents, claiming she had simply slipped on snow. Only when doctors examined her spinal fractures did she reveal what really happened. 'It wasn't until the doctor came and spoke to me later that night that I knew I had to tell the truth,' she explained.

Transforming Tragedy into Sporting Triumph

After a six-month hospital stay, during which her family made regular three-hour round trips to Glasgow, Sammi discovered wheelchair racing at the Inter Spinal Unit Games in 2011. This experience opened her eyes to new possibilities and set her on a path to sporting greatness.

Her determination quickly bore fruit. In her first competitive event, the 2012 London Mini Marathon, Sammi came second. She then dedicated herself to rigorous training, qualifying for the Rio Paralympics in 2016 where she finished fifth in the T53 100m.

Sammi's career has since blossomed with remarkable achievements:

  • Two gold medals at the 2017 World Championships
  • Gold and two silver medals in recent competitions
  • Bronze and silver medals at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics
  • World record holder in the 100m at the World Para Athletics Championships
  • MBE recipient for services to disability sport

Balancing Sports, Television, and Now Motherhood

Alongside her sporting success, Sammi has established herself as a presenter on BBC's Countryfile, returning to her rural roots through television. She continues to train intensively while preparing for the Paris Paralympics next summer, where she aims to secure gold.

Now, as she anticipates becoming a mother in July, Sammi Kinghorn's story represents an extraordinary journey from devastating accident to Paralympic glory, television success, and now the joyful prospect of parenthood. Her resilience continues to inspire as she balances elite sport, broadcasting, and impending motherhood with characteristic determination.
